Another big hard throwing lefty high schooler.
More pitching…….I like it
6’8” / 240 with a mid-90s FB and apparently a nasty curve … still needs a 3rd pitch to develop.
Padres took him at #52 (MLB had him ranked at #57). Mayfield taken at #25 was ranked by MLB at #30. So, Preller was pretty much in sync with the rankings … no “surprise” pull forward of lower ranked prospects. Maybe that is a factor of having a “lower” pool of money allocated making playing the over / under slot signing game more difficult.

I was watching and hoping. Oh well. We got a couple of live armed left-handers. Let's see what the new pitching lab can do with them.

Quote from fenn68 on July 15, 2024, 11:57 am3rd round another HS kid …. SS out of NC (NC recruit). Not much on him …not ranked on the MLB.com but in mid 100s (or later) elsewhere. 6’ / 180. No idea if the Padres see more than the rank or are just trying to finesse some under slot money here.
4th round is a RHRP out of Kansas State … was a closer and ranked a bit higher than where drafted.

Quote from fenn68 on July 15, 2024, 12:13 pm#134 (4C) is a somewhat of a high risk, tools type OF out of U of Tennessee … Kavares Tears. Strong and athletic … played very little until 2024 late but then was very good. MLB.com had him higher at #66. Seems like a project for the development side on his hitting. Upside pick.
#135 (4C) Clark Candiotti (son of Tom) … 23 year old college SR out of U of Arizona (his 5th college in 5 years … not sure on the story there). Does have a good body and a mid-90s FB could jump directly to RP given age. He looks as though he may be another under slot type … building a pool for ???????

Quote from fenn68 on July 15, 2024, 12:19 pmPick #151 … HS 3B Kale Fountain … LSU recruit … ranked #121. Power profile who may end up at 1B or OF … big arm.
Maybe this is where some of the under slot money goes.

Quote from fenn68 on July 15, 2024, 12:44 pmPick #180 … college SR OF/1B Darrien McDowell … likely another under slot signing. Out of U of West Florida … a Division 2 program. He had some outstanding stats albeit against Division 2 quality. Power. Not ranked by MLB.com.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 15, 2024, 12:49 pmI like the Tyson Neighbors pick. A potentially fast moving late inning arm seems like a smart choice given the way this team is currently constructed.

Quote from fenn68 on July 15, 2024, 1:07 pmLooking at the first 8 picks (2 early selections of College SR and a couple of pulled froward types) … maybe the Padres are creating a significant under slot pool for later use with some quality HS arms who were not taken where projected (ie. Top 100). The top 2 HS picks do not seem like over slot signings.
Never know the signing game but either very late today or a couple in the first couple of rounds tomorrow trying to sign one or the other.

Quote from fenn68 on July 15, 2024, 1:20 pmPick 210 … U of Utah CF Kai Roberts … another SR (so possible another under slot). Big for a CF … 6’5” / 205 … poor 2023 but this heavy a .350+ BA with some power.
3 SR selections in the first 7 rounds is a bit unorthodox … just support some building of an under slot pool … for who?????????
