2024 Draft
Quote from fenn68 on July 7, 2024, 6:28 amHave not heard any speculation on the Padres' 2024 draft ... next week. Given Preller's track record ... expect a HS guy at #1.
First pick at #25 then some bouncing around for being over CBT and some comp picks added doe raw loss of Snell and Hader (think the Padres win on this one).
In the first 5 rounds: #25 ... #52 ... #88 ... #118 ... #134 ... #135 ... #151 ........ not a big pool of money to manipulate but Preller et al are good at drafting so still reason to be optimistic.

Quote from JasonE135 on July 14, 2024, 12:03 pmI expect that we will be picking up another HS arm in the 1st round today. I would rather get a college arm or a 1B/OF with power, but it doesn't seem like there will be a lot of that type of talent available when we pick. Oh well, as long as AJ gets quality.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 14, 2024, 2:03 pmThe more I learn about him the more I'm hoping for Brody Brecht. Having said that the draft is the one area where I still have full confidence in AJ. There's no denying he's done well taking high school kids. The real question might be if he'll actually keep whoever he grabs with the first pick around.
Looking at 1st round picks in the Preller era we can see that he's traded the majority of them. Cal Quantrill traded. Hudson Potts traded. Eric Lauer traded. Mackenzie Gore traded. Ryan Weathers traded. Xavier Edwards traded. CJ Abrams traded. Robert Hassell traded. Justin Lange traded. Dillon Head traded. That's every first round pick from 2016-2020 plus our most recent 1st rounder. It wouldn't be surprising to see Lesko or Snelling join that group. That also doesn't get into some of the previous regime's picks that he moved like Turner and Fried.

Brody Brecht has wicked stuff but his 40-grade control scares me for a 1st round pick. Later sure.
Preller collected some good talent in return for good prospects. The one 1st rounder he kept, Jackson Merrill from 2021, is our current CF and putting up ROY quality numbers. I'm happy.

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2024, 6:26 pmPreller on form … HS player with apparent upside. Bit old for a HS kid but apparently did not over showcase and really progressed this year. LHP … looks as though the interesting HS bat were all gone.

6'4"(6'3"), 200lb(+) high-school lefty, 55-grade 92-95 max 97 FB, one plus and one average secondary pitch, 55-grade control, where have I heard this before...? He is Robby Snelling with the secondary pitches reversed, plus change-up and average slurve instead of the reverse for Snelling. Hopefully Niebla can help him improve his breaking ball.
MLB.com mock draft actually got our pick right.
