2024-25 Offseason Talk

Pat Murphy wins MOY. Shildt is runner up. A Padre lost again. East coast bias again?

I can't speak to how Murphy coached the Brewers this year( did they have a better record than us, playing in a weaker division?) But his short spell here was fairly bad. Did not like his managerial style at all.

The fact the term " east coast bias" even exists tells you there's at least something behind it.

All that said, nice to see Schildt recognized for what he did this year.

I think that they went with Murphy because he did have success; although be it in a weaker division, with a smaller budget, their best SP Burnes traded away, and their closer out for a good part of the season.

I dont have as big of a problem with Murphy over Shildt as I do with Skenes over Merrill.

The Brewers won 92 games in 2023 and 93 games in 2024...in a much easier Division and lowered payroll by $10 mil losing only Burnes(basically).

SD won 11 more games in '24,after losing Soto/Snell/Hader/Lugo/Wacha in a much better Division while lowering payroll by $90 mil.

No way Murphy deserved it over Shildt

The Brewers payroll was still 50-60m lower than ours after we lowered it. They traded Burnes. Woodruff spent the year rehabbing. Yelich only played in 73 games. Murphy also didn't get the reinforcements that Shildt did. They traded for Montas and Civale at the deadline. AJ got Cease and Arraez early then added Scott, Adam and Hoeing. That's not to take away from the job that Shildt did. He was phenomenal. Another case where I think both guys deserved it.

Still the NL Central was a joke this year, the Pads played the Dodgers, and a very tough Dbacks and Giants more than other teams in baseball.

And they finished about the very same as last season.

They didn’t “improve” by 10+ games or win a playoff series(I know it’s voted on before playoffs.

Dave Roberts’ LAD had the best record in the NL West outplaying SD, SF, and AZ with an injury plagued pitching staff and a not much after the top 4 in the line-up. If winning in a tough Division is a key … why not Dave Roberts?

I think most of the voters are just looking at expectations entering the season and who most exceeded them. I think the Padres and Brewers entered the year with pretty similar expectations. I think there was a lot of thought that the Brewers would slip behind the Cubs and could wind up battling the Cardinals and Reds for position in the division. The Padres were behind the Dodgers and DBacks and on par with the Giants. Both teams ended up greatly exceeding expectations. At that point I think the separator in the race between Murphy and Shildt is that Murphy is perceived to have done it with less talent and resources at his disposal. Yelich has the one big contract on the Brewers. Compared to the Padres who have Machado, Tatis, Bogaerts, Musgrove and Darvish on a team with a much larger payroll and it's not surprising to see voters favor Murphy. Then you get into the difference in what their GMs added to the team in season and it's another point in Murphy's favor. We might not like it as Padres fans, but trying to look at it from an unbiased perspective I think it makes sense that Murphy got it.

Anyone giving odds on who they think Sasaki signs with? Are the Dodgers truly in the driver seat? Or do we have a shot? Or anyone else for that matter?

Personally, if the kid wants to stand out from his Japanese contemporaries, I'm thinking we have the best shot. Darvish will be here for a few more years, mentoring him, and then Sasaki has the market to himself.

He goes to LA, he'll NEVER be " the guy" with Ohtani and Yamamoto signed for the next decade plus.

I guess it just depends on what the young man wants: be a top dog on a competetive team or a guy on a competetive team? Whilst he may end up being very good, does anyone dream he'll pass Ohtani in terms of production or star quality?

I'm thinking he's a Padre sooner rather than later
