2024-25 Offseason Talk
Quote from Randy Manese on November 13, 2024, 11:33 pmMLB Rumors says 4 years @11 per year, i.e., 44M to sign Hoffman. SPOTRAC predicts a free agent market value of 12.4M over 2 years, i.e., 6.2M per year. Either salary seems beyond the Padres budget range at the moment. Padres probably looking at a low cost bounce back candidate with a low 2025 salary and a much higher salary for 2026 but with a team opt-out. Pitchers are so difficult to throw a lot of money at because they could lose it seemingly overnight, however, the reverse also could be true. Unless Padres free up some CBT space, they likely will be very conservative in finding starting pitching despite what appears to be an obvious need before the start of the 2025 season.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 14, 2024, 12:50 amI could see Hoffman as a Padres target. The last name would certainly fit. Reliable back of the rotation types seem to find 10-13m pretty consistently these days. I could see AJ thinking there's better value and more upside in a reliever conversion play if he's going to have to spend for an arm.
If we want to convert a reliever we might have some internal options that would let us save some money too. There's been some chatter around Morejon moving back into the rotation. I don't think it's very likely, but I've seen multiple models that suggest Suarez as a good candidate. I think Adam and Matsui might have the arsenals to do it. Hoeing and Kolek have worked as starters at different stages in their careers.
I think Reynolds could be ready for a much larger role. Cosgrove will be looking to bounce back. There are some high upside arms like Rodriguez and Pena getting close. Neighbors could move through the system quickly. Sandridge could be a weapon if he can cut down on the walks a little bit. We should have a strong and deep bullpen. If you can free up a spot by moving someone into the rotation and effectively fill their spot with a minimum salary type it's probably worth exploring.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 14, 2024, 9:43 amSaw a clip from yesterday's Ben and Woods show. They referenced somebody who said they talked to Blake Snell and he told them he wanted to come back to SD, but AJ told him he wasn't sure if the new ownership group was committed to that kind of spending.
I think a reunion is pretty unlikely. Just an interesting nugget to consider.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 17, 2024, 11:56 pmWhile the 40 man deadline is Tuesday, 19 Nov, at 3PM PST, the non-tender deadline is 22 Nov. It is possible that the Padres will fill up their 40 man on 19 Nov by adding 6 minor league prospects. It is also possible that after seeing what other teams have done in completing their 40 man rosters, the Padres may non-tender several players on that 40 man to try to sign newly available free agents from other teams or to open some space for the major league phase of the Rule 5 draft.
The most obvious non-tender candidates are Tyler Wade (who would likely get close to 1M in arbitration) and Luis Patino (who may or may not be ready to pitch after TJ surgery). Other candidates include Logan Gillaspie, Bryce Johnson, Brett Sullivan and Mason McCoy. All these players, with the exception of McCoy have no minor league options left. Given the Padres need for a reserve shortstop, McCoy is the least likely to be non-tendered.

To be honest it is just stupid, you give the award to a guy that was only in 23 games out of 162 games, where the Pirates went 15-8, that means that he made the Pirates give or take about 3 to 5 games better, now, Merrill was a key part of a playoff team and played in 156 games, he alone tied a bunch of games after the 7th inning and if I am not mistaken the Padres won every one of those games and still contributed to the other 150 games in some way :(.

Quote from WindsorUK on November 18, 2024, 9:30 pmNot sure in which Universe Skenes outplayed Merrill?????
East coast bias at play. Lots of voters in bed by the time Jackson put the Pads ahead/or tied the ballgame.
Reminds me of Bob Horner over Ozzie Smith.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 18, 2024, 10:29 pmI think Merrill deserved it. I'm not going to say he was robbed. Skenes had a historically great rookie season. He's a CY finalist. They both deserved it. I think they should consider having a separate award for pitchers and position players. I also think they should reconsider the parameters for the bonus draft pick. It sucks to lose it because Skenes won when he wasn't promoted early enough to be eligible for it. If the Padres were an AL team he Merrill would have won easily and secured the pick. Instead we're put in a situation where the only path for Merrill to earn one now is to finish top 3 in the MVP race before he hits arbitration. Maybe they should add a few more paths to give more guys a chance to earn one when multiple rookies have great year.

Quote from fenn68 on November 19, 2024, 2:19 amI would have gone with Merrill with him being a position player with a full season of work. However Skenes had a historic season and do see how he merited the vote. 23 to 7 for Skenes was a clear win but takes nothing away from Merrill’s season and future. Just happy Merrill is a Padre for at least 5 more seasons.
