With the idea that SD needs at least one; if not two SPs for next season, I was reading through an article of players they seem to think will get non-tendered today. On the list, I think there are two that SD should look at signing.
One, Triston McKenzie. In 2022, right after Niebla left he was great. Pitched 190 innings with a 2.96 ERA and 190 Ks. Perhaps a reunion with Niebla can turn around his last two bad seasons. CBS thinks his salary would be around $2.4M and be non-tendered by CLE.
Two, our old pal Cal. CBS seems to think that his possible $9.4M salary is too much for COL, sending Quantrill into FA, he could look at SD (much better pitchers park than COL) and working with Niebla as a bounce back opportunity. Maybe we can get him for $5-6M in FA.
They also believe that Austin Hays will get non-tendered, maybe he can help fill the OF. Mainly a LF (SD need), he has played in both RF and CF as well, and depending on the return of Profar, could an excellent option for a 4th OFer that can spell either Merrill or Tatis on occaision.

Looks like McKenzie signed a new deal yesterday. He's not going to be available. There could be some arms cut loose that could help. I think you would look more at minor league deals or low base deals with incentives for anyone that gets non tendered though.
I did just see that Hays is going to be non tendered. He could be a good target. I would like him a lot on the weak side of a platoon. I think he's less exciting as a full time guy. I think he'll probably look to go somewhere where he can get a shot at being the everyday guy again.

Hays could be a move even if they sign Profar since they need a LF and DH/1B … Profar can handle all three and Hays can handle LF/DH with bonus of CF/RF so still full time player.
Money is still the big unknown. Both what the Padres plan to spend and what the market is set for the FA. Even if individually none are too costly the five adds of a C, 1B/DH, LF, and two SP may be and some hard priority choices / gambles have to be made.

Surprised Padres valued Wade at 900K with a team option for 2026. Thought they would non-tender him and then sign him for league minimum if he wanted to return. Didn't expect too much demand for someone with his limited offensive skills albeit he does have defensive flexibility. Others let go were not surprises. Lot of room on 40 man and can see Padres adding a few more players after the Rule 5 draft; still think Valenzuela has a place on the ML roster.

Tyler Wade signs one year contract.
The Padres did not tender RHP Logan Gillaspie, RHP Luis Patino, OF Bryce Johnson, and SS Mason McCoy. All four are now free agents.
Arraez, Cease, King, Morejon, Adam and Campusano are all arbitration eligible. If AJP and the player cannot agree to a deal it will go to arbitration. No player has gone to arbitration under AJP since Andrew Cashner in 2014.

RHP Henry Baez, RHP Ryan Bergert and LHP Omar Cruz were added to the 40-man last Tuesday. The roster is currently at 33.

Mariners reliever RHP JT Chargois, 34, is non-tendered and a free agent. He is coming off a good season with the Marlins (15 games, 1.62 ERA) and the Mariners (21 games, 2.75 ERA). He sounds like a solid player and would be a good pickup.
What are your thoughts on him?

Will be too expensive at a position of strength when so many key holes to fill elsewhere

$900K is less than $200K over league minimum and the Padres would have to fill his slot with someone (who they do not have) for at best case league minimum… and he does provide bench flexibility plus PR allowing the 26 man roster slots to be filled with hitters with less versatility. Given the alternatives not a surprise sign at that price.
If Valenzuela clears Rule 5 Padres just control him non-roster at AAA until needed and added to 40 man. At the end of the season if not added they have another chance depending on his season and Salas / Campusano.

The Cubs non-tendered Mike Tauchman. He could be a solid pick up. He's gotten on base at a .360 clip with pretty even splits the last 2 seasons with the Cubs. He seems to fit the mold of what we're trying to do on offense. He could be what Profar was before this past season.

December 9 starts the winter meetings … should we expect Preller to be on fire?
Of course SP is a target but there is a desperate need for bodies for position players. Padres only have 12 position players on the roster to fill 13 slots. Consider
C: Campusano, Sullivan
1B: Arraez
2B: Cronenworth
SS: Bogaerts
3B: Machado
LF: Ornelas?
CF: Merrill
RF: Tatis
DH/Bench: Lockidge; Wade; Rosario;
