2024-25 Offseason Talk

I would not rule out Bieber on a low base incentive laden contract and a player option for 2026. Relationship with Niebla. Upside is great.

Sasaki is the pivot point. Given the lack of trade chips and tight budget think adding a strong 4th then serviceable arms after that. That should get them into the playoffs and with 4 quality starters through. Remember they still have holes at LF, SS, C.

Another potential draw for Sasaki is the way Niebla handled Lugo and King allowing them to convert from limited inning RP to starters successfully. They lasted the full season and pitched max innings. lAD had a lot of issues with pitcher injuries.

that also help Preller recruit another RP to SP arm on a short term / lower cost deal.

Only a week and a day before Padres 40-man roster and El Paso minor league roster have to be set prior to the Rule 5 draft in December.  Currently, Padres have six openings on their 40 man and could drop a couple of other players IF they feel they need more roster space.  Not an issue on how many to protect on AAA El Paso, but those placed on that roster will not be subject to the minor league phase of Rule 5 but will still be available for the major league phase.

Only one position player that might make the 40 man and that is catcher Brandon Valenzuela.  Other five spots could all go to pitchers - LHP Omar Cruz, RHP Henry Baez, LHP Jagger Haynes and possibly RHP Ryan Bergert and LHP Ryan Och.  Baez and Haynes would be surprise picks for Rule 5 major league draft given their inexperience but these two are among the most advanced SP the Padres have in their system so why take a chance that a rebuilding team will draft them and then stash them away for a year on their major league roster.  Bergert not showing that well in the AFL while Och came on strong at the end of the year after rebounding from injury so they are more long shots than the other three.

I suspect some releases … trades to clear some more space keeping in mind Padres have 26 man roster holes to fill with FA.

That may also suggest they do not add some of the Rule 5 candidates if they be the first to be put on waivers when FA are signed. Easier to claim off waivers and stash in the minors than select in Rule 5 and keep him on the 26 man plus pay league minimum.

Merrill one of three finalist for NL Rookie of the Year. The other two are Brewers OF Jackson Chourio and Pirates P Paul Skenes. The last Padre to win the ROY was Benito Santiago in 1987.

Mike Shildt is one of three finalists for NL Manger of the the year. The other two are Brewers Pat Murphy and Mets Carlos Mendoza. The last Padres manager to win the MOY was Bud Black in 2010.

ROY Winner will be announced on Nov. 18.

MOY Winner will be announced on Nov. 19.

Profar and Merrill wins their 1st Silver Slugger Award.

Machado wins his 2nd Silver Slugger Award.

Speaking of Silver Sluggers, anyone notice who won the DH Silver Slugger????

None other than former SD Padre Brent Rooker. Wow, that was a miss by Preller on him. Rooker traded to KC for C Cam Gallagher. Ouch!!

How would Rookers bat look in either LF or at DH in SD with 39 HRs and and a .927 OPS, especially at league minimum.

That one definitely hurts. I'll give AJ some credit for identifying him as a guy to trade for in the first place. They never really gave him an opportunity at the big league level though. KC was pretty quick to move on from him too. There are 3 teams out there that wish they could get him back.

Rooker was traded to KC and even they let him go via waivers.

A's just got lucky.

I wouldn't mind the Pads rolling the dice on Philly's Jeff Hoffman and have Nieabla do his magic of converting another RP to SP.  He was an all-star RP last year.  How much does everyone think he would cost?  Thanks in advance for any replies.  Go Pads!
