2023 Season

Well the position player call-up is Brett Sullivan … not sure why although Sanchez has been having some knee soreness. Maybe one last look before deciding on whether they want to try to re-sign Sanchez?

As expected, T.Hill the pitching call-up.

Will Profar get called up? I think just his presence alone will help.......seriously. Guys on the team like him. He keeps it loose(these guys are really uptight!)

Did I read that Machado played 1B yesterday? Has he done that before? Does he like it? Would he be willing to move across the diamond next year? Bogaerts range would play better at 3B than SS.

Bogaerts 3B, Kim SS, Cronenworth 2B, Machado 1B? Are we any better?

Machado was the DH … Carpenter was at 1B. Padres are still trying to get Machado healthy with his elbow (non-throwing) … at least that is the injury being reported. Doubt there is any plan to have Manny at 1B … at least for years.

Expect they will bring him up … the initial report said they wanted to get him some AB in AAA first (he has played LF).

They will have to add him to the 40 man roster first … which means they will have to DFA (or 60 day IL) someone but that should not be a big deal then drop someone from the 28 man active roster. (Guessing Gamel may serve both roles since he is not getting much playing time).

Better question on Profar (FA after the season) is if the Padres want to re-sign him for 2024 given the weak bench and his chemistry with the team … and for how much? Given his experience as a FA last winter and ending up with COLO performing badly … he should be willing to sign at a “reasonable” price and try to recapture his 2022 performance with SD.

After the Padres suffered through Cruz, Dahl, Gamel, Odor, Kohlway, Dixon … Profar has to look pretty good as an upgrade. Maybe a low base with incentives and options for 2025 … Profar is not that old and gives versatility with better production than those 2023 options.

I have to think Profar will be back next year. There's no real reason to sign him otherwise. It sounds like he regrets leaving and it shouldn't take much to retain him after the year he had. He's loved in the clubhouse and should be a cheap depth piece.

Sanchez breaks his wrist in today’s game … season over. With Nola out of the picture (but only 3 weeks left) will they add a insurance catcher (Cantu or Seattle) or just go with Campusano / Sullivan and use this as the chance to add Profar? Sanchez could go directly to the 60 day IL to make the roster room.

Side … in a rehab game Choi breaks his foot out for the season … ended up a real wasted pick-up at the deadline … think 0 for 11 then injured … and now injured again … FA after the season.

In line with the Padres' fortunes this year, too. Zero from Choi and the worst starts of the season for Hill. We would have been so much better off just keeping Wolf.

Of course, our luck lately says that Suero will turn into a top 50 prospect within 18 months, to boot.

I like this move. He's got a strong minor league track record. Give him Hill's spot in the rotation to finish out the year. He might actually have a chance to be a useful piece.

Agree a good look and see at minimal cost ... 27 with some good MiL stats but not so much ML. Padres have little other options right now and do have to get through the rest of 2023 ... R.Hill looks done (unless there is another IL arm in the mix).  Otto has minor league options so should be worst case insurance in 2024 in AAA.

With the DFA of Gamel ... the next move before tomorrow's game has to be the add of Profar  to return to the 14/14 balance of pitchers/position players.
