2023 Season

PreviousPage 89 of 95Next

You said It, what a nightmare, right? It doesn't make any sense, still think we need at least a couple of home grown players, but still, we are not talking about not winning a championship, we are talking about not making the playoffs with 3 wc spots, two of them really up for grabs for quite a while now, and you know what, I am so stupid that I'm gonna get and increase and an upgrade on my season seats, have no idea why, but I believe that next year will be much better, it has to be

Next 12 games … SF, PHIL, HOU, and LAD … all playoff teams as of today.

In the standings Padres have 73 losses … and TIED with PITT, WASH, and NYM. So, a good chance the Padres fall behind those three in the next two weeks into 13th place in the NL.

But wait! They are only three games ahead of STL (76 losses) … will not take that much to have STL pass SD relegating the Padres to 14th place.

Before the season most saw 2023 as being a memorable season … I guess we were right … and wrong.

At this point I say call Kohlwey back up and add Ornelas. Let them play the corners and slide Tatis to CF just to get him some experience out there to finish the year. Let Batten bounce around and play everyday too. Give those guys a chance to prove they can play a role next year. Their might be a few other guys worth considering too. Maybe even give Merrill a few weeks after the Missions playoff run ends. Try to salvage something out of the last month of this nightmare of a season.

I second that!

Kohlwey just didn't look like a ballplayer to me when he was up earlier. Give him 20+ starts in LF and prove me wrong.

And this might be the best time to see what we have in Ornelas. We know what Grisham and FTJ can do- let's see if Tirso can play.

And if we bring up Merrill, play him at SS! Bogaerts has been a complete flop. I just don't see any way you can justify him at SS next year. We have much better options both defensively and offensively. Hell, why not see if Xander can play 1B or LF?

Apparently we signed Profar to a minor league deal yesterday.

Given Cronenworth is on the IL … clearly Manny is ailing (elbow) and may be “rested” … Batten is filler not a real prospect … might they opt for Rosario as INF support? He is at least younger and may have some upside … plus he is on the 40 man roster.

I expect T.Hill to be the pitching call-up.

Since I don’t see the Padres sitting (or DHing regularly) Soto or Tatis … not sure either Kohlway or Ornelas would get much AB as the Padres may have to use the DH for Manny and rotation players with late season aches and pains. Plus guessing the Padres will want to put out their prime line-up for the next two weeks against all playoff contenders so they are not accusing of folding and giving an advantage in the race to those clubs.

Possibly don’t want to bring up any young prospect (think Merrill) to get exposed to this failing team and probably a down clubhouse … wait until next spring with a (hopefully) new mix and the annual optimism of ST.

Not surprised … maybe he becomes today’s call-up? Cost is only 1/6th of league minimum.

Can debate his on-field benefit vs cost in 2022 BUT all reports he was a major positive clubhouse factor … and the Padres seem to have lost that with his departure and the departure of Stammen / Alfaro / Manaea. In a way he is like Kim … always in the game and exuding a positive / upbeat demeanor … if I am watching, I want to see that.

Might see some creative contract after the season for 2024 (much lower cost than before) given the weak bench, FA to be, limited prospects ready, and the potential of dealing Soto.

I never want to read too much into PCL stats and it's a small sample size at the big league level, but Batten has absolutely destroyed lefties between the 2 levels this year. With his ability to bounce all over the field and run a little bit he could be a valuable bench piece of he can keep it up. There's nothing to lose by running him out there. I'm not opposed to Rosario either if they think he's all the way back.

The Padres should not care one bit about other teams and what they might think about them waving the white flag at this point. The focus should be on 2024.

Given the alternatives, I can see Batten being around as a bench piece next season ... 28 and a "nice" minor league career ... not really a major prospect ... BUT his versatility, speed, attitude is perfect for a bench role even if his bat is not the greatest. Actually ... despite yesterday ... also a good defender in the INF/OF.

For 2023 probably now Profar becomes the extra position player call up ... so not likely to see Rosario or Kohlway / Ornelas baring more injuries or a DFA (but getting so late probably not worth it).

Why not Rosario over Batten?

Why not Rosario over Batten?

Possible in 2024 depending on the rest of the bench and how Rosario finishes 2023 in EP / winter ball / ST. Basically with 2023 being a partial season due to injury … probably needs some more development time.

Rosario has the better upside future … but in the short run Batten gives some OF back-up.
