2023 Season
Quote from 3fingersplit on August 28, 2023, 1:33 pmDarvish is now on the 15day IL with right elbow pain
I’ve said it before and will keep saying it…Do NOT trade away your young pitchers…trading Jackson Wolff for Rich Hill was just stupid along with all of the other pitchers that have been traded away. Instead we have Garcia who is garbage and Martinez who is not far behind. Every other team runs out a young guy and this team makes them look like Cy Young
Fried , Gore, Bednar etc come to mind
build this team through the farm system and develop the guys you draft…the Dodgers seem to have a new young talent take the mound every year

Not one for absolutes in either direction on trading or retain prospect pitchers. It clearly is situational on the team needs and the projection of the prospect vs the return.
IF the team is on the cusp of a playoff spot at the trade deadline and refused to make a move … the fan base will be up in arms.
I see the problem (Preller and the front office evaluators) as not being very good at projecting the ML players in the return and their ability to perform for the Padres. The prospects may (or may not) turn out good but not getting value in the return is the consistent problem.
Trade deadline moves have consistently under performed … in part because there really is not all that much that works in trade deadline adds in MLB … so almost always over pay … with a few “exceptions”.
Preller’s gang does well on amateur scouting … OK on minor league scouting … just something goes wrong at the ML player level.
I am almost to the stand pat position at future trade deadlines … or sell.

Quote from fenn68 on August 28, 2023, 3:31 pmIf the Padres are being aggressive in moving up players in the minors … with the current standings and what should be season ending injuries to Musgrove - Darvish - Cronenworth … I may double down on the idea of releasing now the FA to be (ones not getting QO) and test out some other players … good or bad.
R. Hill and Garcia of the pitching staff. Gamel of the position players. Let’s get a fresh look at Rosario or Ornelas … maybe as a reward Kohlway and/or Sullivan are still on the 40 man. Maybe a non-roster pitcher needs to be looked at … Iriarte has to be added to the 40 man anyway … maybe even a pitcher that does not but has a legit shot to help in 2024 like Bergert, Kopps, or Mazur.
Given the situation the fans would at least get to see some fresh blood looking at the future instead of the dregs of a failed season even if they keep losing.

Quote from 3fingersplit on August 28, 2023, 9:28 pmThe guy I would like to see this year in San Diego is Tim Lopes…2B, 3B and OF
He is hitting.286 with 35 SB and 13 HR at AAA El Paso…we’ve seen Batten , Sullivan, Kohlway. Azocar and others so give Lopes a shot and see what happens. Jake is out and Xander is still battling the wrist problem , Manny has a elbow strain and Grisham takes way too much called third strikes on the inner half
Lopes would bring some hustle to the team and might as well see what he’s got

Quote from fenn68 on August 29, 2023, 3:55 amPadres are not going to this intentionally (just not in their DNA) BUT there is a significant advantage for them to fall into the bottom six teams in MLB.
Since they have repeatedly exceed CBT penalty thresholds … one of the penalties is having their next draft selection dropped back ten slots UNLESS they finish in the bottom 6. With the penalty given the current standings they would pick #20 …. Picking #6 would be a lot better. Currently they are only 3 games ahead of PITT for the sixth worst record … 30 games to go … so would not take much.
With potentially season ending injuries to Musgrove, Darvish, and Cronenworth and maybe the desire / need to “rest” the likes of Machado, Bogaerts given their nagging injury issues and going with the bench / call-ups (not all that good) we might see this happen.
Don’t like “tanking” … don’t like losing even if out of contention … like to see the players who will return have success … BUT the Padres may be in an unavoidable situation that might have a bit of a silver lining.

Quote from fenn68 on August 29, 2023, 4:06 amParallel thought … Padres could go a long way to even strengthen the prospect list by not only moving to the #6 pick next draft but also add picks for putting the QO on Snell and Hader and then not losing a pick for signing a player with a QO.
Even better going forward if they drop payroll in 2024 to under $237MM … first threshold … and reset getting out of the penalty zone. That would not be hard if they don’t sign any expensive FA while trading Soto and may shaving a bit on the fringe (e.g. Grisham, Barlow) and get lucky if Martinez declines his player option.

That just brings me back to my issues with the PCL. That line looks impressive until you realize the league average slashline is .273/.369/.458. There are only 30 qualified hitters in the majors with an OPS over .827. Lopes at .817 is actually below average. His game seems like it would benefit from the new rules and I'm not opposed to giving anyone a September audition at this point. I just don't put much faith in PCL performance anymore. Especially not when it comes to older journeymen types.

Ever since the first WBC and how the 2006 season turned out for Peavy, I have been against our pitchers participating, maybe its just my perception, but IMHO there have been a lot of injuries and underperformance that can/could be related to playing competitive baseball in March

Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 30, 2023, 4:59 pmAt this point I say call Kohlwey back up and add Ornelas. Let them play the corners and slide Tatis to CF just to get him some experience out there to finish the year. Let Batten bounce around and play everyday too. Give those guys a chance to prove they can play a role next year. Their might be a few other guys worth considering too. Maybe even give Merrill a few weeks after the Missions playoff run ends. Try to salvage something out of the last month of this nightmare of a season.
