It appears that Sanchez has passed the Darvish test last night. So, we should expect him … for now … probably catch most of the games for his offense.

If Nola shows no signs of an acceptable rebound and Sanchez is catching almost every game in June / early July … Preller’s quest for a catcher has to be critical. In this era it is rare to have a catcher even make the “qualified list” … and not sure about Sanchez history of games / season … so once we hit the heat of late July / August, Sanchez could be dragging resulting in lack of productivity.

For what is worth Sully came within a triple shy of a cycle last night.. I'd rather continue going foward with Gary/Sully 1-2 x a week.. than Nola who is not part of the future 2024 and beyond.. where I see Sully as an emergency #3 AAA/SDP shuttle C

Has anyone seen an actual diagnosis for Bogaerts's wrist issue? It seems kind of wild that they committed for 11 years and the best explanation they can come up with is that he has a lingering issue that flares up from time to time.

Nope .. but it sounds like a carpotunel (spelling) type thing.. maybe something that can be repaired ..or maybe something just cronic.. He did say that in Boston he would have had a few days off when it flared up..But that (with Manny out) he didn't want to put the team 2 man down, so he played through some pain ..now with Manny back, feels like he can take care of it a few days off.. and get back to it..

The wrist issue has been with Bogaerts his entire career ... and he has played putting up All-Star numbers. However, if its has been an issue that long ... and if it could be repaired ... would have thought that Boston would have taken care of that years ago.

I guess the Padres understood the injury and recognized that it did not keep him from playing on average over 130 games per season and preforming well. Padres, in the win now mode, took the big money dive and did not worry about the future.

Personally would not have made that 11 year deal ... but I just don't like long deals for 30 year olds ... especially multiple on the same team. Machado - Bogaerts - Darvish - Cronenworth are going to be old all at the same time and that is a major risk with the money tied up in them. Tatis is at least younger ... but will get older.

Yeah I read that he's dealt with it at various points over the years. Obviously he's had a productive career while doing so. It's just a little worrisome that in year 1 of an 11 year deal it's hit him so hard and they just seem to be banking on cortisone shots and hope to get him right.

Just read that CLE has designated Zach Plesac for assignment. With Niebla in tow in SD as pitching coach, and Plesac under control through 2025, should SD not take a flier on Plesac?

You would think that Niebla could hopefully right his ship???

Probably if Niebla likes him from his time in Cleveland ... he has 3 minor league options so does not have to be put on the 26 man even if claimed on waivers (although with a manageable contract in the $2-3MM range doubt he makes it to SD's pick) and likely would need to make a trade to out bid other teams making a claim.

A #5 SP type (mid-4 ERA) but that is not bad and probably better than the Padres' AAA SP options. Just not sure he can fall to the Padres.

When was the last time we won more than 2 games in a row?

If there was ever a time we needed a 5+ game winning streak it is "right now"!

Is Weathers pitching himself back to AAA? His April (3 starts) was very good and encouraging then the Padres sent him to AAA for a couple of weeks and upon his return his 5 starts in May/Jun have been just plain bad with a high ERA/WHIP in each outing. Remember in 2021 he started hot and was terrible in the rest of the season and that got him 2022 in AAA (and pitched poorly).

Only 23 so given is pedigree he should have upside with further development but given the situation with the Padres this year … that development time should not be the ML. Maybe AA and SA pitching environment may be the better choice for his development … at least for a confidence build.

Lugo is looking poised to return soon (and is “rested”) or Martinez should be considered for a return to a starting role. So, one to start over Weathers the other in the pen … while managing both their pitching load.

The offense has been an issue all season but we were hoping that after a slow start the team would turn it around and start hitting to their histories. Looking at the past 30 days … not happening … not even close. Not a lot of changes that can be made now but thinking it is time to force a few … maybe for better results and maybe just to give a wake-up call to the entire team … consider some of the 30 day performance have been painfully bad resulting in player OPS below .600, below .500, below .400 and that is really bad for those players.

Note that from a stats point of view Soto, Tatis, and Kim (282/361/423) are all delivering. Not going to mess around with Machado, Bogaerts, or Cronenworth who have to rebound for the team to succeed. Sanchez looks to already have replaced Nola.

So, CF and DH need to be the initial targets for a shake up … Grisham (145/280/246), Carpenter, Cruz, Azocar have all been abysmal. Getting regular roles for Odor, Dixon, and maybe Rivas need to be explored ASAP.

Grisham is the tricky one … and he has proven he has no upside offensively … actually a major liability with that 30 day slash line just confirms what we have observed for over a year … defense is not winning the Padres games.

I have gone over to moving Tatis to CF (note that both the team and Tatis in the past preferred CF as his regular spot). That will allow Odor / Dixon / or an “easier” add at some point to cover RF. Same mix can support the DH role.

Sadly not a lot of help in AAA (but may some long shot gambles given how bad the incumbents are) … need to do something NOW.

Crismatt is in the clubhouse ... a number off days coming that could eliminate the need for a 5th SP ... could we be seeing a move with Weathers?
