Thinking in regard to Carpenter who frankly looks done (the NYY time last year was not real). He signed a Padres deal for 2023 with a PLAYER option for 2024 for about $5MM.

I know if the Padres release him in 2023 (no one will claim him on waivers) the owe the 2023 contract BUT what happens to the player option? Technically the contract is voided when released and he is a FA … so logically the player option is no longer an issue (I think).

So, given that at the end of the season Carpenter can exercise that option and lock in 2024 … should the Padres release Carpenter before he has the chance to exercise the option … save $5MM next year … open a roster slot … not sure that they can’t get equal production for some player at or near league minimum.

Not much trade value in these guys at this time and coming off the IL … don’t really want to trade the healthy (and currently more productive) arms … setting up for some DFA or minor waiver deals to clear house. Sequence of the injured returning has an impact on choices of how to offset them.

Note Morejon will also come off the IL but he can be optioned to the minors. Plus an added factor is that Suarez, Morejon, and don’t forget Rosario are all on the 60 day IL … so their returns will trigger a need for a delete off the current full 40 man.

Combine 40 man roster issue and the players without minor league options and who is currently productive … not optimistic on Crismatt and Garcia making it to July with the Padres.

I'll wait and see .. but of we don't go 17-10 in June (worst case 15-12)... I think without "punting" on the season AJP should explore  Deadline deals as far as selling

Snell... I think we can get a decent haul with all the SP injuries (maybe  NYY)

Carpenter (someone out there will give us a bag of seeds)

If Suarez is healthy maybe explore Hader deal..Cristmatt and Garcia

Here is why .. if we are still 3-5 games from a WC ..(means we played June and July at or near .500 =NO GOOD.. and (August is a beast)..

It would give us a chance at some looks for 2024 and maybe just maybe the right depth adds - the will not be back in 2024 propel us back into the playoffs..

IE Weathers stays at SP as Lugo returns ... in essence letting AJP trade Snell at what could be a decent haul

SP Yu/Joe/Wacha/Lugo/Westhers .. maybe pick up the expiring WhiteSox dude for depth.. easier for AJP to evaluate extensions/Team options and for Ryan to establish/claim 1 of 5 spots for 2024

OBVIOUSLY IF we find ourselves up 1 or down 1 for the WC spot .. then approach should be different .. But if not ..why not shake it up and start planning for 2024 while not entirely giving up on 23...

Like to see Rivas play some now that he is up..

That is what will make the call hard late July.

Side: don't expect to get a big return if you trade Snell or Hader ... both FA after the season ... even if going good. At best some prospects (not ready to impact 2024) if you want quality. Only a few contenders will be play and they are not going to use anyone of quality off their rosters for a 2 month rental. If I want a quality return ... I would focus on getting one (maybe two) high upside prospects in A ball (or lower).

Also Batten is on 40.. can play all over and if a PR is needed 17 steals only 2 CS this season and 35 and 4 CS 2022/23 combined.. plus dude walks a ton.. .375 OBP in 2023..

That shows we’ve had some bad luck in low scoring games and emphasizes our issues hitting with runners in scoring position.

The RISP issue has been better lately.

Padres will need someone who can play middle INF and has a chance to provide some offense … Iglesias has a chance given how well he hit last season but Batten is struggling in AAA (and was a non-hitter is his ML appearances) and Lopes is just untested. Padres at at a point in the season that getting the best offensive boost is critical.

I could see Dahl DFA’d who is really struggling in AAA and was bypassed by Rivas in the recent call-up.

Apparently Iglesias defense has really dropped off … so probably should not bank on his reputation as as elite SS. So, might make sense to shift Kim to SS … Croney to 2B … and give a shot at 1B/DH mix and match to Odor (L) / Carpenter (L) / Rivas (L) / Dixon / Iglesias.

If Nola shows no signs of an acceptable rebound and Sanchez is catching almost every game in June / early July … Preller’s quest for a catcher has to be critical. In this era it is rare to have a catcher even make the “qualified list” … and not sure about Sanchez history of games / season … so once we hit the heat of late July / August, Sanchez could be dragging resulting in lack of productivity.
