Apparently MLBTR is saying his defensive metrics have really fallen off in his 30s … still worth the look since his BA/OBP is decent and his veteran experience has value. We will see if he is tested at SS and 2B in EP plus get an up close view of how much his defense is eroded.

Bob Nightengale is reporting that Tom Cosgrove has been called up. I haven't seen anyone else confirm it yet.

Wonder about the future of Nelson Cruz as the RHH DH
After a hot start his last 5 games he has gone 1 for 15 with 10 K / 0 BB. The interesting comment I heard that after that hot start pitchers just totally stopped throwing the FB and have only given him breaking balls ... and he has not been handling them.
Doubt the Padres do anything near term (partly with little in the queue of any talent) ... but if this problem persists ... might we see a move?

In the midst of the reports of Pomeranz getting pummeled last night in EP was a comment that his velocity is not up to his history (low 90s) ... plus at least one more rehab.
Always a pessimist concerning Pomeranz and could we see pulled from the rehab (remember only 30 days) and let him continue on the IL and work on the sidelines until he gets his velocity back up (if he can)? IF he completes the rehab ... he has on options ... has to be on the 26 man or released.

Surprise!!!!!!!! Weathers sent down not Kerr.
Some question about Wethers velocity down when sent to pitch in the pen ... not sure that is valid but it came up.

His velocity was noticeably down yesterday. He was struggling to hit 90 with his fastball. Hopefully they're just being cautious with a young arm.

He starts games 92 to 93 ramps up to 97-98 then settles around 95 through 5-6IP
1st BP in AZ was 90 to 92... last night in Chicago 88-90...
Maybe he needs more time to loosen up.. like when he knows he is SP..
Weather could have been a factor for him last night..
Still would have sent Kerr down or even Both Weathers + Kerr and brought up Cosgrove and Tapia..

Maybe the Padres really want him to keep stretched out as a SP and EP would allow that. That also would suggest that they would prefer Martinez in the pen when the need comes for another SP and would go with Weathers back in the rotation.
If his velocity drop is just not getting the warm up time … maybe he should not be a bullpen option anyway … hopefully it is not a precursor to injury.
Apparently his family was not please with the demotion and made that clear on Twitter … not helpful for either Weathers or the Padres.
