Quote from MrPadre19 on April 24, 2023, 12:07 pmThese guys play 162 game (sometimes more),travel 10's of thousands of miles by plane...thousands of miles by Bus,live out of hotels and away from their families...yet still I'm not happy when they get a day off!
I mean....what am "I" supposed to do tonight?
Last time there was an off day I realized there was a woman living in my house!
Turns out she's my wife.........who knew?
Guess I can talk to her

I would go Merrill + a few 7 to 20 type specs and a lotto DSL guy.. if we eat the $$ (which we would cause Othani by himself would bring >$12mil (+ penalty $$) or so owed to him at the deasline)... But Only if we believe we had a 75% chance or greater of resigning him long term...
Otherwise I may lead with a Mazur + Zavala ++ type deal if my odds were below 50% on keeping him
Apparently if the LAA are not in playoff contention … Ohtani would like to be traded and is saying he will test the FA market. The question for the Padres starts with who else wants to deal for Ohtani and how high would the bid up the price for 2 months of the best player in MLB? Guessing any team in the running will be happy to eat all the money. Given the expected price tag … very few teams would pay the price for two months unless he was clearly the key piece (and they had the money and willing to deal the prospects). Who that would be will be clearly at the deadline.
Can’t set odds on signing him long term since can’t judge Ohtani’s wants. Padres will be “interested” but remember they were “interested” in Judge, Turner, and others and were out bid. So a trade really has to think he is a two month rental.

On Turner and Judge, they were not outbid, they chose to play somewhere else. SD had higher bids to both, per rumors.
I think Ohtani wants big city and yearly playoff chances (no other Japanese star on the team).........LA Dodgers.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 24, 2023, 1:22 pmIs the "no other Japanese player on the team" thing really a thing?
Seriously curious.
I would guess it would be the Yankees, dodgers,Giants,Mets,Padres as the front runners...could see him wanting to stay on the West Coast...so may rule out the NY teams(though could you really ever rule out the Yankees?)
But I would hope that is "not" really a thing and playing with Darvish might be a + on our side?
Would love to know for sure if this is a real factor

Quote from fenn68 on April 24, 2023, 1:35 pmNever heard a “reliable source” on no other Japanese player on the team as a criteria for a Japanese player to sign. For me, sort of sits as an urban legend based on limited observations. At some point that legend will burst as there will be more Japanese quality players and not enough teams that want to sign them.
IF the Padres again go deep in the playoffs … and knowing Seidler will spend the money … knowing the long term commitments to Tatis - Machado - Bogaerts - Cronenworth - Musgrove - Darvish ensuring long term contention … West Coast … and (rumored) he would have gone to the Padres if they had the DH when he came over … that should stack a lot of cards on the Padres’ side to overcome any urban legend speculation.

Don't think Othani (introverted) is too keen on Big City life..
Also SD from what I recall was his #1 choice coming from JPN But the NO DH then sent him 50 miles north.. and even then it came to a last minute decision between us and them..
Now with the DH and the $$ to play... I would list his Preference as 1)SD 2)Seattle 3)LAD 4)NYY 5)LAA... NYY only because of tradition ..I've heard him say he prefers the West Coast (unlike Turner and Judge)...

Out of respect for other JPN players Marketing opportunities ..it is a player to player unspoken rule.. that they prefer not to play in the same team so the other JPN player cam maximize his MKT
With that said I believe Othani would benefit Yu in marketing $$.. the history of the 2.. the Master/Pupil of it all.. and the elder wise Yu with the Best player in the game angle lends itself to so many marketing angles that it could be crazy beneficial for both...
Also With Bally Sports and a New TV deal I can see a joint Japan/Siedler type partnership on a Local TV deal worth a ton of $$ even if a 3rd party gets involved..
I'll go out on a limb that if Othani is available at the deadline he will be a Padre
AND
If he is a Padre at the Deadline he will join the Next 10 yrs + of Padres baseball

OK, I did a quick google search and found an article from the NY Times. Pulling comments from that article. Link to article at the bottom.
At one brief time, BOS had four Japanese players on their roster probably the Daisuke days.
In 2012 when Darvish arrived, the Rangers already had Koji Uehara and Yoshinori Tateyama on their roster. But only Darvish was a star.
In 2014, NYY had Masahiro Tanaka, Ichiro Suzuki, and Hiroki Kuroda at the same time.
So I guess it can happen, just doesnt seem to often. Although, if you want hope, then look to the 2014 NYY.

Quote from fenn68 on April 25, 2023, 4:17 pmThis one caught me off guard.
Padres have signed SS Jose Iglesias to a minor league contract (per MLBTR). Still a pretty good SS and hitter at 33 … not sure why he was not on a ML roster but was on a minor league deal with with the Marlins but opted-out.
I guess he signed with the Padres because they offered … have a chance to play in the post-season … maybe (just speculation) that he (and the Padres) see a path to the ML as the back-up middle INF (supplanting Odor) and allowing Cronenworth to lock into 1B and Kim into 2B. In turn that lessens the need for Carpenter in the INF and let him just DH.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 25, 2023, 4:57 pmI’ve always thought Iglesias was under rated.
Also surprised he didn’t have other/better offers.
