2023 Season

PreviousPage 32 of 95Next

Lest we forget … Adam Engle is on a rehab assignment in EP since April 15th and has to be recalled (or released) at the end of next week as his 20 days is over.

I am leaning towards releasing him. At age 31, he has little upside of a relatively under average career (225/286/350) and a poor rehab so far (138/242/318 … and that is in the hitter friendly PCL). Azocar is better now (and has a future) as the light hitting RHH bench OF.

Opens a 40 man roster slot that could be used for an add of a non-roster player if needed or room in June to get Suarez or Morejon or Rosario off the 60 day. Of course the Padres have a lot of DFA options that would not be of great consequence in 2023 or the future (Avila, Tapia, Dixon, Batten, …)

I would take just about anyone over Odor right now.

His velocity was noticeably down yesterday. He was struggling to hit 90 with his fastball. Hopefully they're just being cautious with a young arm.

He starts games 92 to 93 ramps up to 97-98 then settles around 95 through 5-6IP

1st BP in AZ was 90 to 92... last night in Chicago 88-90...

Maybe he needs more time to loosen up.. like when he knows he is SP..

Weather could have been a factor for him last night..

Still would have sent Kerr down or even Both Weathers + Kerr and brought up Cosgrove and Tapia..

Maybe the Padres really want him to keep stretched out as a SP and EP would allow that. That also would suggest that they would prefer Martinez in the pen when the need comes for another SP and would go with Weathers back in the rotation.

If his velocity drop is just not getting the warm up time … maybe he should not be a bullpen option anyway … hopefully it is not a precursor to injury.

Apparently his family was not please with the demotion and made that clear on Twitter … not helpful for either Weathers or the Padres.

Sounds like that is indeed the plan. They want to keep him stretched out, so that he can step in when they go back to a 6 man and/or when someone like Lugo needs a break. Mom and dad reacted emotionally in the moment. It's not a great look, but it is what it is. What's sad is the number of clowns in our fanbase that are attacking them for it. Most of our fans on Twitter seem like pretty toxic people.

I would take just about anyone over Odor right now.

I am waiting to DFA Odor until Iglesias is ready to add (he had a couple of hits in his first appearance in EP). Keeps some INF bench in place.

Would not be surprised to see both Engel and Odor DFA'd by mid-May and Iglesias up. Bench then moves to Azocar (OF), Iglesias (INF), Carpenter (DH/1B/corner OF), Cruz (DH), Sullivan (C). Roster at 39 poised to add a non-roster player if needed (likely a RP who is hot).

Yeah I like Sully (3rd C) because he is lefty (replaces Odor from that perspective) and has some OF experience if needed.. Also Iglesias/Lopes in AAA are way better hitters vs Odor.. Dixon too, but Dixon seems like a guy that needs regular reps and he aint getting those in SD unless we have an injury..

Found this metrics comp of Nolan and Manny very interesting...

Lugo is starting today and has already logged 22.2 innings so if he goes 6 he is at 28.2 innings.

Last season he totaled only 65 innings ... so on a pace to match 2022 by the end of May. He has not approached 100 innings since 2018. Padres do plan to "control" his innings ... maybe to 100 innings ... and that includes the innings he logs in the pen.

So the dilemma ... when do the Padres move him to the pen to conserve innings? Wait too long and that may hurt his effectiveness for the rest of the season but as of now he is one of the more effect SP for the Padres. The other factor may be whether they see him in the pen mid-season but potentially return to starting down the stretch ... need to keep some innings in his arm if that is part of the plan.

I guess the flip-flop will be with Martinez giving them both SP and RP roles during the season. Not sure where Weathers fits into the picture.

Just saw old friend Luis Torrens was designated for assignment . Pretty sure he would be an upgrade from Sullivan

No so sure … checking his career slash line. Padres have Severino lurking in AAA who would be about the same.

Serious ? How much is Nick Martinez worth? Is the 2/32 team option too much? I don't think so..and here is why

1- Nick pitches like 3 BP arms inning wise

2- He can start 5-10 games a yr

3- He can save a BP by himself on a given day

4- He can close

5- He can set up

We pay Snell $16per for 130 IP.. I think Nick can pitch 140-150+ BP/SP/CL and set up... He has shown he gets better and better the more pressure he gets aka post season 2022 .. Last night he was hitting 95 mph.. He may only be a 3rd/4th SP but combine that with elite level (track record 22-23) as a reliever and you got perhaps the 3rd (Yu/Hader) or 4th (Joe) most valuable P in our ballclub... I think 2/$17 player option is too low..I think 2/32 Team option is maybe a bit high ..but maybe just right..
