I must say that I am shocked. I guess this means that Honeywell is making the team.

Quote from Randy Manese on March 27, 2023, 6:25 pmThe surprise to me is Weathers. I understand he had a better BB/K ratio than Groome during the spring, but he definitely got hit harder in ST than Groome. Guess the Padres are going with experience although Fenn indicated that Kevin Acee said the Padres coaches said Weathers had better stuff than Groome. My impression is that Weathers has a very short leash, to be replaced by Groome or Teheran as early as late April. If Tapia makes the team need another 40 man slot freed up. We have one for Odor, the other two for Dahl and Tapia are likely to be Batten and Avila being DFA'd.
By the way, the Thursday Opening Day may be rained out! We'll see how bad it is on Wednesday going into Thursday afternoon. It would be a shame if we have one of our rare rainouts, especially on what should be a very special opening day after last season's run in the playoffs and the expectations for the team this year.

Quote from BoosterSD on March 28, 2023, 12:58 pmReading a blurb on CBS, and this writer had his 23 "bold" predictions for the 2023 season. The one regarding SD was trading for Corbin Burnes at the deadline. The caveat of course, is that the headliner would be Merrill Jackson, plus at least two other prospects.
Burnes salary is relatively small for his ability $10M± and he is under arbitration control for 2024. Do you include Jackson in a trade for Burnes?

Would the playoff contending Brewers trade one of the best arms in MLB who they control (with Woodruff) for 2024 and another playoff run for a prospect(s)? Probably not.
But if they did ... yes, make the trade since the clear window of the Padres is 2023-24 and getting two playoff runs out of Burnes is significant upgrade.

I would assume that this writer is under the impression that since they did that with Hader, they could do it with Burnes as well. Especially since he was very vocal about his displeasure with the Brewers FO during the recent arbitration hearing. Another nice reason that Preller has avoided these hearings.
Or, perhaps he thinks that they will not be in contention towards the deadline. Which is a possibility even in the weaker NL Central. Even though MIL has some very good SP, some other aspects of the team have some holes in them.

Quote from fenn68 on March 29, 2023, 11:43 amProbably will not get the final 26 man roster until tomorrow morning ... a lot more questions than I expected as to who makes the roster.
40 man sits at 39 after the return to TB of Lopez but a lot of potential non-roster adds given the number of potential IL moves plus the roster players already optioned to the minors.
From a pitching perspective potential IL stints for Musgrove, Suarez, Pomeranz, Morejon, Castillo that only leaves 11 pitchers still in ML camp. That suggests two non-roster pitchers get added? Rumor Tapia may be one ... no idea on the second ... if guess they could call back someone but these IL players are not new news, so not sure why they optioned the others.
From a position player perspective Tatis (not on the 40 man) and Engel is heading to the IL. That means the Padres need to add two bodies to the 26 man. They have optioned Batten and Dixon (again knowing the active roster need) ... so again 2 non-roster adds or Sullivan hangs on since he is on the 40 man? Sounding like Odor has moved to the inside track for one ... then a battle between Dahl and Kohlway.
So in the worst case scenario and they add four non-roster players ... use Lopez slot for one ... then need three DFA moves. Not that hard ... maybe Batten, Kerr, and Cosgrove (all should clear waivers).
Maybe that starts the season, but in 3 weeks Tatis and some of the IL players return. Musgrove and Suarez will bump out two ... don't think Tapia has minor league options and anyone's guess on the second add. Only other option with options is Wilson. Morejon and Castillo will be optioned. Eaton and Tatis return ... Odor has no options, so can cover the returns with optioning Azocar (don't think they will) and Dahl/Kolhway. Note that Engel cannot be optioned (but can be released). Side: no expectation on Pomeranz but IF he can pitch .... think a long rehab stint before he returns (otherwise a 60 IL if the 40 man is filled and they need to add).
If all that plays out ... 40 man could be sitting at 39 (or 38) in about a month leaving room for other non-roster adds as needed.
Small stuff in the big picture but still important in construction the best roster to cover a 162 game season.

Quote from BoosterSD on March 29, 2023, 12:44 pmSo its supposed to rain again tomorrow in SD!! Forecast is calling for rain until 2-4pm. So would they push back the starting time to 5pm or so, or would the go with a double header on Friday?
Has anyone heard what the Padres plans are for a rain contengency?
