2023 Season

Have to admit have seen very little of Soto while he was in WASH and was not impressed enough in his SD stint to see him as worthy of the largest contract in history. Elite hitter sure but at what price / length of contract?

We are relying on a lot of “experts” as to Soto being a “generational hitter” … same experts that some years back pushed the big contract for Jason Hayward based on his all around play and youth … wrong.

Given the in place commitments to Tatis, Machado, Bogaerts and likely the need (desire) to extend some of the high profile prospects (Merrill, etc) before those contract end would a mega Soto deal become a problem. However, don’t think that is a concern for Siedler … win now and figure the deep future later.

Arguing against myself, we don’t know the salary levels that seem “normal” in 10-15 years … $30MM could seem like $10-15MM in today’s terms … making Soto a future “bargain” even with diminished skills and well below the cost of any future replacement with similar / better skills.

A lot of IF/THEN assumptions going into an extension decision … but at the.core … how good is Soto and what is the right contract to match value.

I am in the Yamamoto + Jung camp vs Soto at 1/2 the price... + Othani.. so 2024 we have all ..2025 we let Soto walk.. Othani DH ..Jung >Soto on the field and similar OBP skills .. no where near the power or overall bat..but Soto seems like a DH sooner than later to me..2 elite SP and a young OBP machine is >Soto in my book

I saw a picture on FB today, showing the "core four" of the 2017 Padres and the "core four" of the 2023 Padres. And the caption said, IDK if I can name all four of the 2017 "core four". It was Renfroe, Hedges, Margot, and someone I dont recognize.

I tried to add the picture, and dont seem to be able to do it.

The 4th guy is Carlos Asuaje who is probably better remembered for being the guy who was playing videogames with Wil Myers when Wil made some comments about Andy Green not realizing that Asuaje was streaming than for anything he did on the field.

Nice call, barely remember the name.

What a difference 6 years makes. Although, would still like to have Margot on the team as the back up/platoon option with Grisham. But our OF should be fine.

Wouldn’t Myers have been one of the “core four” in 2017?

Considering he was our lone All Star in 2016.

Guessing it was Asuaje to further show how far we’ve come but he was never a core player.

I think it was because they all won a ring together in the minors and were supposed to be the faces of the new era of Padres baseball.

Yeah, they are all sporting rings in the picture.

If Stammen is done which it seems likely he is. Why not find a spot for him on the major league staff so he remains part of the big league squad and has a chance of winning a ring? Would be a classy organizational move and a show of respect for what he did for the club.

His wife and kids were at the game last Wed. and the kids were so excited when he went in.

3-4 young kids in Stammen jerseys were easy to identify.:)

Very young so may not have seen him pitch much.

Feel bad for him but he's had a good career and was not making the ML roster either way.

I wouldn't be surprised if they find a job for him.
