2023 offseason

Machado contract is official, will be announced today. Unlike Darvish, his contract is back loaded. $45M signing bonus spread over the entire contract, $13M per season for 2023, 24, and 25. $21 in 2026, and then $35M from 2027-33. MLBTR is suggesting the back loading is to accommodate Soto this season and next actual cash flow dollars wise, although the CBT hit is still $31.82M.

Manny showing he's all in to get that WS ring with Soto on board this year and next.  Also opens up the possibility of an Ohtani signing or getting that one more top of the rotation starter before our own minor league prospects became major league ready.  His first 3 years under the new contract at "only" $17,090,909 also coincides with the last 3 years Padres have to pay Hosmer one 12M per year.

Note that the big jump in 2027 is the first year of the NEW CBA and just before Tatis’ contract makes its big jump. Cash is cash but wonder if that timing is planned or co-incidental. Bogaerts will still be around but around the phasing out of Darvish and a couple years past the Hosmer money. Then at that point the need to consider an extension for Musgrove.

Agree that helps keep Soto around for 2024 (but maybe not longer) and maybe post-Soto a few signings on shorter term deals and the hope the prospects start filling in the blanks at league minimum. By 2027 (5 years away) we should see Merrill, Zavala, some of the top SP prospects, Salas, and probably some another offense piece or two.

All this does suggest the Padres do have a cash spending limit (payroll and penalty).

It's also far enough out that we should have some prospects contributing at league minimum by then.

SD and Preller bring in another former TEX player in Rougned Odor. I am sure it is just pure depth option, and he is a LHH bat so could be a better option than Dixon.

But lets go total conspiracy theory for just a moment. And yes, this is in jest. Preller hijacks LAD and trades Kim to LAD with the Lux injury for Diego Cartaya C or RHP Pepiot.

So with Machados' new deal we are now well "under" the CBT threshold for 2023?

So with Machados' new deal we are no well "under" the CBT threshold for 2023?

Padres are now at $274,704,000 … $1,704,000 OVER the third threshold of $273,000,000 per Roster Resource.

Remember that does not count incentives earned during 2023 (and some will) and any “normal” minor leaguer called up to replace a player on an IL stint will earn ML minimum vs minor league money. If they add Teheran or Hamels they will get more than minimum (not sure on others).

Bottom line is that they will be well over the $273MM threshold with just normal in season movements. Trade deadline moves just will add another upward pressure.

Guessing not an issue with Seidler at this point for 2023.

So going down from $30 to $13 still wasn’t enough?

Oh wait,CBT is still figured using the avg. of the full deal correct?

Then what/how will his taking $13 the first 3 seasons help?

Just lower the cash outflow for a few seasons?

And I assume you mean $273 mil?
