I don’t see that either but I do think FLA will be his post career home (and winter home) … so his in season home probably does not matter much to him and could be in CHI, NY, SF, SEA, HOU, etc. just a flight to his real home. (And he will buy or build a huge house wherever he lands).

Maybe sign Manny to another 10 year deal, with an opt out after 5 again?
That way we show good faith( and good dollars) but let him return home for his last few productive years?( hopefully one of the Florida teams can afford him then)

I think the best comps for a potential new deal with Manny are the deals that Bogaerts and Turner just signed. They're all roughly the same age and have been similarly productive since Manny came to San Diego. Bogaerts and Turner both got 11 year deals at 285m and 300m respectively. Manny will be a year older if he opts out, so 10 years in the neighborhood of 300m seems reasonable. He'll probably be able to find more if he really wants to chase top dollar, but I don't think that's going to be his primary motivator.
Manny will have made over 170m in his career after this season. He could shock everyone and keep his current deal like Arenado and still have enough money for multiple lifetimes. By all accounts he likes it here and has a great relationship with Seidler. Seidler is on the record as saying he wants Manny in San Diego for the rest of his career. My guess is Seidler makes him a fair offer and he stays.

Ashby will probably get some tandem work and come in as a bulk type behind openers, etc., but functionally, I think he'll be more of a "starter" than a "reliever"
Lauer makes too much sense and Padres and Brewers are annual trade partners

Not sure an opt out at age 36 would be that appealing to anyone unless the deal was extremely front loaded and dropped off in the last 5 years. Sort of a Hosmer level deal.
$200MM years 1-5 … $100MM years 6-10 (extreme view of the concept).
Preller seems to be OK with players testing the FA market … has his limit … and probably would match Machado’s best offer unless it crosses Preller’s limit. That should make Machado happy and signed … or not. However, that also probably comes with some time limit given the need to focus on SP and potentially another hitter for 1B.

A good chance that becomes the basis of a trade with the Padres. Both have 2 years control, Lauer has been recently the more effective pitcher so would prefer him. Lauer is about $5.5MM and Houser about $3.5MM.
I will link this with a comment by a reporter suggesting the Padres will make a trade before the season (no target deal) and Cronenworth would be the Padre going because of his trade value (3 years control, low cost, All-Star / gold glove 2B) … guess Carpenter becomes a full-time 1B baring other moves.
MILW needs a 2B (going with a rookie light hitter) … so probably needs some supporting pieces in the deal to balance the money but Cronenworth / Garcia for Lauer plus a prospect(s) could work on the money side while clearing a bit of the RP issue and potentially add a nearer term prospect.

Addendum: if they did move Cronenworth for a SP … should increase the motivation to re-sign Machado.
Other than Luke Voit are there any other FA 1B on the market? Any 1B to be had via trade for the likes of a Pomeranz / Crismatt?
Cronenworth for a SP could start a quick domino effect on secondary moves with pitchers to fill the 1B gap.

If they move Crone zone it better be for a > return than Lauer.. If Marlins think one or 2 of their top P prospects are ready Luzardo + Cooper for Crone + Crismatt makes some sense for both..
Cooper/Carp/Campusano could all play 1B ..the 3 C's 😆
If Voit doesn't find a home..would not mind signing him on a milb deal as insurance for Carp or Cruz getting hurt to be honest
Dalbec with Casas and J Turner at 1B/DH might be a good rebound play from Red Sox
Vientos (Mets) is blocked and not a top 100 prospect so could a Pomz (if he shows well) for Vientos + a golden ticket be a deal to be made?

Not a factor for Manny but…..if he opts out and leaves he will go into the hall of fame as an Oriole or most likely for the team he signs with.
He may not consider this but fans do….
Whereas if he stays even just the 5 years remaining on his deal he goes in as only the 2nd wearing Brown.
Gwynn and Hoffman wore Blue.

Buster talking to AJP... around 39 minutes in..1st couple min are Basketball ..but then he gets into Machado, Soto and Tatis..as well as SP mentions Weathers/Groome and Teheran
The rest of the interviews are good too...
Looks like there could be some extension talks with Manny. Etc..
