Appears Lugo is between Pads and Dodgers

I don’t get it. Padres don’t really need RP Lugo as a priority so why spend on him.

If it is down to SD and LAD, he has to be overpriced in the minds of other teams … most who NEED RP.

He has not been a SP for 4-5 years and has been a 60 inning type guy … hard to see him fill a starting slot.

However, if the Padres land him, who gets bumped out of the pen?

Both LAD and SDP are looking at Lugo as a SP..

#5 SP just need 5 IP per start.. could be a piggy back situation with Morejon as both build up since neither has SP .. with 6 SP (Groome/Avila/Teheran/etc) .. not a bad plan every 6th day with a handful of skips when off days allow BoMel to skip a start here and there

I mean look at SP Heaney (LAD 2022) type role..

Don’t see the Padres dropping $12MM (or even near that) on any of the remaining hitters. Less so now if they are setting a priority in signing Lugo.

If they had $12MM more likely two adds $8MM and $4MM with some ability to play an OF slot and one a LHH.

Well apperantely we were in on Bassitt at $20+ per.. so I am not sure that we don't have $$ left...

Have not seen anything that Lugo (who will be 33) can go 5 innings … last four years he has been a one inning (sometimes two) pitcher.

It would be a real gamble IF the price tag is high if the intent is a SP (or even a multi inning RP).

However, if they see him as a further upgrade of the pen … making another RP trade bait that can be leveraged into a hitter … maybe.

Soto saying he is at 60%??? Was he playing hurt for us? Or is he just saying that to apeace his fans ..as "I want to play but my team needs to clear me to play.. " winter ball..

But did not sign him. Think Preller / Siedler have the money for the top players but not spending those dollars on players they don’t rank as high or have more or less sufficient alternatives.

With this offense … and considering a full 162 games season … could be better off to use $12MM on multiple hitters to deploy as the #9 and cover the inevitable injuries. As it is the drop off from the first 8 is into the abyss. Need an OF / 1B and at least one LHH.

If the Padres do sign Lugo … and Morejon is #5 and Teheran takes #6 … Lugo is in the pen … most likely Crismatt is out / Lopez is out / and all the next tier in AAA. That is lot of talent in an in demand RP position … sets up trade options.

For the “right return” does that put Garcia and/or Wilson in as trade pieces. Garcia was good in 2022 at a low cost but only has one year control and “older”. So maybe a two year sign of Lugo makes Garcia expendable and creates less an issue next winter with all the FA?

Justin Turner to the Red Sox
