2023 offseason
Quote from fenn68 on November 16, 2022, 11:10 amLooking at Soto’s numbers prior to 2022 BA/OBP/SLG were out of this world good.
Actually with WASH in 2022 is BA took a dive and continued to suffer in SD. Does that change in WASH coincide with the departure of Long as the hitting coach? Did WASH try to alter his approach somehow while slotting him 2nd?
Will the change in hitting coach for SD allow him to return to his former glory?
Given the historical stat line … he needs to be in the middle of Tatis and Machado both for getting on base and driving runs in to maximize all his talents.

I think the only given as far as line up spot next season, is Machado in the 3 spot. He should be MVP this season....yet to be seen.
So does that mean Tatis, Soto, Machado 1,2,3
Or, Machado, Soto, Tatis 3,4,5. In my mind, this makes the most sense. Depends on who we can have lead off, with in my world, Crone sitting at #2.
#1=TBD, Crone, Machado, Soto, Tatis.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 16, 2022, 11:21 amSo with Martinez new contract, are we assuming he is returning to a starting pitcher role? And is that #4 or #5, depending on if they sign another SP.
Sign Davies type, Martinez is #4.
Sign a Senga type, Martinez is #5.
Or do we think he is still in the pen?

Martinez is more of a #5 vs #4.. and Senga could be a #1-#2 ..with a floor like a #3.. so if we sign Senga it's Senga #4 Martinez #5 AND (Groome/Avila/Wethers or other) #6..
Martinez is a 5 IP type guy..he gets into big trouble a 3rd time through a lineup..so an ideal #5 that gives you 5 IP 2 ER..(sometimes 3) on a consistent basis..
It wouldn't shock me if we sign 2 more SP and one of Groome or Co. Assumes Nick Mart type role..
Martinez was resigned to start

He starts … at least for the beginning of the season … the role is his to keep.
Don’t think they will spend the money for two more SP … at least two more they are convinced are better than Martinez. Groome and Avila (and maybe Morejon) are in the weeds to take his role mid-season if he is suffering as a SP.
Since I am money obsessed … if they push money toward the offense and the two added bats … outside chance they either go low end FA (<$5MM) or with Groome et al or bet on a non-roster reclamation project signed to a minor league deal and getting elevated. Either way a low cost #5. Maybe just a scramble in ST to find a winner.
If eventually he is returned to the pen … likely Crismatt is the odd man out unless Pomeranz has landed on the IL again.

If the consensus is that Martinez is returning to the SP ranks, then I agree and they do not sign two more SPs. I think it is one more. So if you agree with Henry, and he is more of a #5, then do we still chase the likes of a Senga, Walker, Quintana. Or if he is more like a #4, then we chase the Davies, Bundy type market.
I think at the money they have invested Preller views him as #4. I think from his history at this point, I view him more as #5.
But with budget reality setting in, do we just go with the Davies/Bundy at less than $5M, and spend some money on LHH bat for 1B or LF/RF?
If we think they have about $20M left, could we not get Benintendi and Davies for about that $20M?

Quote from fenn68 on November 16, 2022, 12:20 pmI am guessing the “better” SP (Senga - Taillon - Walker - Quintana) will just drain the budget and leave very little for the offense. So a Bundy - Davies level seems like the level they initially target.
So, swinging over to Benintendi (not really sure of any other plus LHH targets) makes sense. Probably the 2nd bat is just a ST sort out with some minor signings.
Preller has a pretty good gauge of the cost of his targets (at least in the zone) … and timing is critical so by waiting on one they lose out on two and three. So, could see Preller throwing out a wide net and alter his signing priorities depending on favorable cost and willingness to sign early.
For example would Preller put Benintendi as his top priority but Benintendi’s agent is dragging out the process and asking more at this point than Preller want to spend on him …meanwhile someone like Walker is ready and willing to sign at Preller’s price. Good chance Preller shifts and make signing Walker now the plan and figure out the bats (at a lower cost) later. Basically the FA market will shape Preller’s priorities given multiple needs and likely not the budget fill all with the best talent.

Quote from BoosterSD on November 16, 2022, 12:50 pmThe perceived defensive flexibility of Tatis, Kim, and Crone does provide him with some wiggle room when looking at FA bats.
If Benintendi falls into our lap at the right price, then Tatis can stay on the INF. If Bell wants to resign at the right price, then Tatis can play in the grass. If a decent 2B option is right for the team, then Crone can slide to 1B. Really allows Preller to search for the player he wants at the price that he wants.
Of course, maybe Seidler and Preller say screw it, and just go huge and bring in Judge for RF, and drive SF and LAD nuts!! 😛

Quote from fenn68 on November 16, 2022, 1:04 pmInteresting on the Martinez options.
First move after 2023 is the Padres and they can take the $16MM / yr for two year. For them to that Martinez would have to be a strong SP in a market without a lot of SP options.
IF the Padres decline Martinez can opt in at $8MM / year.
So, if Martinez sees a market (either as a SP or in a role similar to his 2022) that will pay more … he does not opt in. IF Martinez, after 2023 performance doesn’t see a better deal on the horizon, he opts in.
Padres seem to be betting that if he becomes that RP/spot starter at the level he was in 2022 … the $8MM annual is fair compensation.
So, one way to look at, Padres gave him a guarantee that fits his hybrid RP role but the route to a better deal if he is successful as a SP.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 16, 2022, 1:07 pmI always keep an eye on 2024 ..and there is no way in hell we go into 2023 with Only Joe #2 and Martinez #5 locked in for 2024...no way.. Why I think Senga or the like is the play for a SP now.. 1 Bat on offense ..+ Tatis back is plenty more than we had in 2022..and add to that someone Campy/Dixon/Kohlwey/Rosario/anyone else DHing .. and remember for the yr we got absolutely not much from DH ..(under .700 OPS) /1B and RF... Full yr of Soto..Tatis should cover 2 spots.. and DH was so below league avg anyone can cover it and do >.. P will be an issue without 2 *1 2 3* starters in the fold for 23.. we have the 1 2 3 for 23.. but only the ONE guy Joe for 24..so again No way in hell we go into 2023 with only ONE top arm for 24
In a perfect world Abreu DH/1B and Senga SP would be my 2 FA adds.. probably around $27-$30 per yr for both.. leaving any other additions as min $$ signings or waiver claims
