I don't think you really want to be relying on any of Morejon, Groome, Weathers or anyone else in the system to make any significant number of starts. I think we need 2 starters minimum and preferably a third or a swingman type.
I agree, thats why I was thinking the #4 Senga, Walker type, the #5 Davies, Bundy type, the #6 Martinez RP/spot start, and then kids would fill in hopefully brief injury periods.
That #4-5-6 set could cost $30MM by themselves and zip left for two hitters.
Thought you already had Martinez money in there, so if you didnt, maybe Martinez doesnt come back? We havent heard anything yet regarding him yet anyway.
Nope … did not include Martinez money.
Beginning to think Martinez money may be higher that most want to pay him just based on the signings of Diaz - Suarez - Montero and now even Anderson. All got more than expected …
Even Anderson getting 3 / 39 based on one very good season coming of a career mid-4 ERA … if he gets a $13MM AAV … Martinez $10MM?
I dont see it.. there are yet 10-12 arms > Martinez if not more in FA..and another 10 in the arb/non-tender could be traded by Thursday .. including Lauer..Nick doesn't have the track record as a SP than a lot of these other guys do..and as a reliever he is not "elite" like a mMontero or Suarez.. i see Nick 3/21 to 3/24 Max.. maybe a 4th yr but that AAV at $7-$8
I don’t see it either … and would not pay him BUT it would not rule out some team going to that higher level.
Although, given Martinez’s “unique” resume … we may see a complicated contract with incentives based on starts / total games and opt outs on a multi-year guaranteed deal.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 15, 2022, 1:51 pmQuote from fenn68 on November 15, 2022, 9:34 amSeattle is putting Jesse Winkler on the market to a) make room on the 40 man; b) clear $8.5MM. Note that he had knee surgery at the end of the season and was ticketed for neck surgery this winter.
Had a bad season in 2022 in SEA after some outstanding years ... but in hitter's paradise CINN. Horrible fielder but potentially a LHH DH with power.
Given that profile ... should not get a lot of traction except maybe for a couple of mid-range prospects who are non-roster. Under contract, so a chance SEA just releases him (if no takers) and some team can sign him for league minimum.
Would the Padres be in on him if he was released? Would the Padres be in on him if SEA ate some of the contract? His 2022 was not "good" but just pretty average ... LHH with power.
I read somewhere he has worn out his welcome in Seattle.
A head case if you will.
Teammates want him gone....was said that he doesn't work hard in the weight room or on his game.
How true I don't know...but if even remotely true it may be a hard pass.

Turning down the $19MM QO!
Calculated gamble at age 32. Prior to his outstanding year with LAD, he was a mid-4 ERA type and if he regressed to the norm in 2023 he might not be that much in demand in 2024. So, guaranteed 3 years / $40MM ($13.3MM AAV) in LA vs. one year in LA at $19MM then ?????.
Maybe thats why?
Don't know what he signed for but at age 32 even 3/30 is better than 1/19
Anyway you look at it it's $11 mil more.

Well Winkler is no kid so probably not really going to change.
Moreover, on a legit contender, not sure I want to spend to see IF any player can make a turnaround (be that attitude or health). There are alternatives who are players who have the attitude and will go to the post for a full season … so don’t waste the time, money, roster spot.

Not guessing in FA on day 4... GMs don't even know what's going to happen.. Those predictions are just that this early in the offseason
