2022 Season
Quote from Randy Manese on April 10, 2022, 7:35 pmGarcia and Clevinger were both placed on the 10 day IL on 04/04, which makes them eligible to come off after 4/13. I would guess Garcia will be ready by that time, but may want Clevinger to make a rehab start before throwing him into the rotation. Assuming Martinez pitches as well as he did in ST, we're looking at Martinez-Darvish-Manaea vs SF; Musgrove-xxxx-Martinez-Darvish vs Atl; Manaea-Musgrove-xxxx vs Cinn; day off on 4/21; Darvish-Manaea-Musgrove vs LAD; day off 04/25 before 6 road games vs Cinn and Pitt. (Could be Snell-Gore-Martinez vs Cinn, followed by Darvish-Manaea-Musgrove vs Pitt, which takes us to 1 May and the roster reduction/off day on 2 May).
If Snell is healthy, then he pitches after Musgrove vs Atlanta; if Snell on IL (don't think we can make it effective on 04/10, so 4/11), then he misses all the opening home series, since he can't come off until after 4/20. This probably means Gore brought up to pitch vs Atlanta and Clevinger possibly activated to pitch against Cinn. With the off-day on 4/25 can sort out the rotation after that but may want to give Darvish an extra day of rest (see above guess).

Quote from Randy Manese on April 10, 2022, 11:11 pmGuerra has improved, but still can't be depended upon consistently. Agree that he'll likely be DFA'd. This will allow Gore on the roster to take Snell's place on the rotation once Snell goes on IL. In the meantime, Guerra is just place holding for Garcia to be added back on the roster unless there is another blowout one way or the other versus San Francisco.

Quote from fenn68 on April 11, 2022, 5:31 amI would think … since this is early in the season and the Padres don’t want to make Snell’s injury worse … he goes IL even though the preliminary comments from Snell make the “tightness” seem not too severe.
IL would have him miss his next two starts (Apr 15th and April 20th). The following start would be April 27th (two off days lag that date) and should expect he would be back for that given the minor level of the injury.
However, IF the Padres see him ready for the start on the 20th (with a chance he is ready for the 15th) … might not DL him with the fallback of Crismatt / Stammen on the 15th plus the DFA of Guerra for Garcia to add to the pen depth.
I would not rule out the call-up if needed being Knehr … he pitched yesterday an would be on “normal” rest for the 15th. Could patch him together with Crismatt and Stammen as needed.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 11, 2022, 7:41 amThe Padres stance on Gore has always been that they won't bring him up until it's time he will stay.
If Snells injury is indeed minor it doesn't seem like he would be the one getting the call even if Snell is placed on the il.
Unless they intend to go to a 6 man rotation that is...which it doesn't seem likely at the moment anyway.
Personally I'd like to see it...been pushing for it for years.
A few less starts for each guy would allow them to go a few extra pitches each start as well....may not tax the BP any more than we already do even if they are down one guy?

Melvin has said he does not like the 6 man rotation ... prefers to have pitchers stick to their historical routine of pitching every 5th day and doing their standard pre pattern in the other 4 days. Then throw in the scheduled off days and your top pitchers are going only once a week.
He does have ... so far ... his starting pitchers going 90 pitches for 6 innings +/- ... would pushing that pitch count up further increase the risk of the SP losing effectiveness?
Personally never like take starts away for your best 1-5 SP and give them to the 6th best.

A 6 man rotation actually means another bullpen day and why waste bullets in the bullpen when you can use them in a game ?
Pitchers are a creature of habit and they build up innings by being on a set rotation.....6 man rotations take innings away....been there...done that

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 11, 2022, 1:10 pmI understand the reasons not too...but when you have guys limited by their pitch count like Clevinger and Snell, plus you have 5-6 guys who would be #3's or higher on most Clubs,it seems it would make at least some sense.
But the main point was that I doubt Gore is gonna come up for "one" start and go back to AAA...so that means it couple be Reiss Knehr instead...ubless they've completed changed their stance on Gore?

Quote from Randy Manese on April 11, 2022, 1:37 pmWhile the top of the rotation is looking effective and healthy at present, what the Padres have is essentially 4 starting pitchers for 2 rotation spots. We'd like to think Martinez will show as he has in ST against SF, but what if he doesn't? What if Snell goes on the 10 day IL then needs a rehab assignment? Will Clevinger need more than just 1 rehab? Is it wise to keep Gore in EP or otherwise pitching in high-altitude venues - EP doesn't play in non-high altitude venues until 3-7 May and then again from 17-12 May?
It may be that Gore becomes a regular starter and Martinez backs up either Snell or Clevinger as another long man - he could even back up Gore depends on who is the healthiest. I don't like leaving Gore in the Pacific Coast league for any extent of time IF he is ready to go - which is what it looks like to me. He needs to be rewarded for all the time and effort he has made to get himself back into contention as at least a middle of the order starter. And....Snell (if healthy) is probably the pitcher who is going to get the most return in a trade.
No mention of Snell to IL so far today, so maybe it was just minor.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 11, 2022, 1:56 pmAs good as Gore has looked it's still only been a combined 17 innings between spring training and AAA. If it's just going to be a spot start I'd rather see him stay down. Let him force his way onto the roster and let him know that when he gets up he's going to stay up.

Quote from fenn68 on April 11, 2022, 2:11 pmWell they don't have to make the call on Snell for a few days (can go retroactive start date) ... so still a toss-up on going IL at all.
He was fine until just before the game start (he was actually on the line-up card handed in) ... so coming out for "tightness" may have been precautionary.
