2022 Season

PreviousPage 10 of 87Next

Hard to move off the pitching dynamics for the start of 2021 when the SP got pulled early and the RP got burned out after 2-3 months BUT

This is 2022 and Melvin has a reputation for effectively handling pitching staff ... so would not try to second guess this early (4 games).

Consider the 3 starters: Manaea (1 game / 7 innings); Darvish (1 game / 6 innings); Musgrove (1 game / 6 innings) ... that is longer than 2021 starters early and has taken a lot away from the pen innings.

On the flip side the 10 RP are lightly used so far ... maybe could use MORE work early in the season (maybe not). Rogers (2 games / 2 innings); Johnson (2 / 2.1); Suarez (2 / 2); Stammen (2 / 1); Hill (2 / 1.1); Crismatt (1 / 3); Guerra (1 / 2); Adams (1 / 1); Wilson (1 / 1); Lamet (1 / 0.1) .... and Garcia should be back after Thursday.

Four games in and (if you discount Crismatt's start) ... Johnson's 2.1 innings is the most.

So could the Padres be on the reverse profile with Melvin ... getting a higher SP inning count and saving the pen to be strong late in the season? Sure seems as that first starting 3 are capable of that profile.

Martinez is still a wild card ... Snell even if healthy has is not an innings guy ... Clevinger if healthy is ... Gore has not pitched enough in any recent season to think he could be going long in starts and go deep into the season.

If Martinez is effective ... maybe the piggyback of Snell / Clevinger (as he fully returns to health) is best for that 5th slot. Gore stays in AAA under a "managed" workload until mid-season. At that point if everyone else is still healthy .... Preller has trade chips to bolster the biggest Padre needs with Gore still available as the next up.

Is Taylor Rogers available again tonight?  If not ... who?  Suarez?  Asking for a friend 🙂

We've also got Garcia and Pomeranz due back at some point along with Morejon........so more depth.

I could also see Kopps up if need be at some point this year....as well as Avila if we need a long man/innings eating reliever.

Weathers and Kerr also so I'm not too worried about the rotation or the Pen really.

Unless of course more IL situations arise.....

Melvin indicated in his post-game yesterday that he needed to get other RP's into the game.  Rogers could be made available tonight for a save opportunity but I wouldn't be surprised if he went back to Suarez - it really depends on how Rogers feels after throwing last night.  I'm thinking we probably see Hill, Lamet and possibly Adams against the Giants tonight after Darvish, hoping Darvish goes at least an effective 6 innings.  If the game is out of hand, one way or the other, Guerra will eat up some innings.

Like the way Melvin has handled the staff so far and even though we've dodged some bullets, most have risen to the occasion and got critical outs when needed.  Garcia looks ready to come back on the 14th - maybe he'll throw another rehab inning before then.

The Padres announced this evening they’ve claimed reliever Kyle Tyler off waivers from the Angels. In a corresponding move, fellow righty Javy Guerra has been designated for assignment.

MacKenzie Gore joins Padres in San Francisco, could start Friday at Petco Park

Take on the Braves best 2 starters this year in the first 2 games, but their weakest in the last 2 (Fried not pitching well but deserves a pass at this point in the season).  Braves bullpen is not stellar, so hopefully we can swing our bats and get into that pen sooner than later.  Eclectic scheduling the next 4 days may give Padres a body/mental time zone advantage but all these games are going to be challenges.  Braves have he best line-up we've faced yet.

Just for the record ...

San Diego Padres recalled RHP Pedro Avila from El Paso Chihuahuas.

Didn't see that coming!

Any update on our man child( i. e. Fernando Tatis Jr.)?

Still looking for a mid summer return?

Still looking for a mid summer return?

Last report I saw was that he was hoping to start swinging a bat in 3 weeks ±.
