2022 Season
Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 16, 2022, 4:52 pmQuote from fenn68 on September 16, 2022, 4:13 pmHeard a replay of yesterday’ post game comments from Melvin. Interesting that maybe for the first time this season Melvin was PUBLICLY upset (can’t tell what he has been behind closed doors or one on one with players before).
His post game with the players when longer than in the past and delayed to post-game with the media.
He not only disliked the players performance but added that they were given sufficient information on this pitcher (what pitches he has and how he sequences them) to form an AB plan … and apparently that input was not used by the players.
If the players are marching to their own drum … coaching, managing, analytical support even if changed will not get improvement. Probably not all the players … but maybe we should be focusing on the players that are “un-coachable” and unproductive.
Will be interesting to see if Melvin makes some line-up changes to emphasis his displeasure with some of the players.
Quick ? Wouldn't it make sense (next time we face a AAA P for the 1st time) to start Campy + Azocar + Liberato and Rosario (over Soto/Kim/Nola/Grish) forget lefty/righty splits..all these guys have had success at AAA against Nelson and Jamyson or whatever his name is (last night) I mean our guys went 1 for like 20 (guessing /but only Kim hit 1).. I mean they would at least have matched that and likely mashed vs a P they've faced and rocked before

Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 17, 2022, 8:56 pmCAMPUSANO .353 .389 .588 .977 OPS since coming back up from AAA
AZOCAR .455 .500 .515 1.015 OPS since coming back up
Looks like AAA/MLB development is going well for the young Pads

Quote from WindsorUK on September 18, 2022, 1:22 amReally hoping the Mets stay in front of Atlanta, and we catch the Phils because it's currently showing us going to St. Louis for 3.
I have a better chance of becoming the King of England than the Pads have of winning 2 of 3 in Missouri!

Has to have been a discussion on adding him to the 40 man and calling him up … no idea what the internal Padres folks have as an evaluation of his ML projection.
Basically he is a RHH, 30 year old, 1B/2B/3B … so another Drury type and therefore somewhat blocked. Maybe a better hitter than Liberato but Liberato is a LHH and OF and fills a different need. I guess the other route would be to option Campusano but suspect they want Campusano up and “learning” if an injury hits Alfaro or Nola and he needs to step in.
Hopefully Padres re-sign him as a minor league FA after the season with an invite to ST … should be an opportunity with the FA departures.

Quote from fenn68 on September 18, 2022, 4:29 amLooks as though Melvin is expanding Azocar’s role and starting to use him vs. RHP … in some interviews Melvin seem to be impressed by Azocar’s work ethic and improvement … besides the fact he is out hitting Grisham.
In the long run … still don’t see Azocar as the starting CF but more of the 4th OF. I need to see more of him against all opponents. For now, clearly doing more than Grisham.

Also, looks as though Melvin is actually using Campusano and links him with Musgrove … maybe because Musgrove may be the easiest to catch and Musgrove seems to have the personality that will work with Campusano to develop his game.
A little extra rest for Nola / Alfaro down the stretch is good … and if an injury to either Campusano would not step in cold.

Campusano's framing is ridiculous (good) and basically makes all Musgroves low and slightly low (out of the zone) pitches look like strikes.. last 2x Campy has caught Joe ..SF and AZ Joe has pitched 2 of his best games of the year and easily the best 2 of the 2nd half.. look for that to continue for Musgroves starts to end the yr and into the postseason.. we will carry 3 C and (not sure) if postseason rosters are cut back down to 26.. Campy will take the 13th position player spot over Liberato (Profar/Grish) can easily be the LHB off the bench of Azocar or Myers are starting on a particular night...

Quote from fenn68 on September 20, 2022, 3:22 amIf the Padres have a 7 - 8 record in their last 15 games, MILW would need to go 11 - 4 in their last 15 games to finish ahead of the Padres. Possible yes but odds are looking strong on the Padres’ side. Also, Padres tied with PHIL in the loss column, so possible PHIL loses more than SD and even if MILW gets hot … it is PHIL that gets bumped.
