If FTJ reports NO discomfort after the first few games, he should be on a plane to SD!

Yup.. 2 groundouts and a flyout plus 2 BBs is better than looking at strike 3 every other at bat (Myers and Grish) with the former turned into a singles hitter and the later hitting a HR every 10 or so games played.. Tatis should be on a plane to DC for Friday's game tbh..Nats SP is very AAA like anyway.. so why waste ABs at El Paso ..

When Tatis returns, it will be interesting how he is used in the field.

So far just speculation but can see the some legit debate on what will work best for the team and for Tatis.

First in the you are here perspective:

1. Kim vs. Grisham vs. Drury (one likely out of the line-up to make room for Tatis) … Kim is one of the best hitters vs. LHP, Drury is strong vs. LHP, Grisham is weak against all pitching but is the best defensive CF option.

2. Tatis has played very little in the OF(CF) and although his athletic skills should allow him to develop into a plus CF … right now in a playoff run it might be a stretch risk CF to him. Has not helped that in his rehab he has not been playing CF yet.

3. Padres want Tatis’ bat in the line-up … but does bouncing him from SS to CF to DH hinder his focus on offense or just not allow hm to settle in defensively anywhere?

2023 is a different debate but for the current playoff push … what is best for the TEAM and not Tatis?

————————————————-

I expect an initial period of mix and match … and more strategic “rest” for Cronenworth and Profar in order to get the best match-ups. Tatis, Machado, Bell, and Soto will play every day.

That's going to be fun for Bo Mel.. I can see Manny DHing (if not full healed) 1x a week at least Kim at 3B... I can see Tatis in LF giving profar at least 7 innings off..D sub late..or just off day for Profar...CF like Wil for at least the 1st 6-7 innings...etc etc etc...

Beaty decision incoming 60 IL

Tatis 60 IL

Pomz 60 IL

Johnson is still a while to go... Adams done til 23..

How good is Kim?... Dude is absolutely murdering Heat now (had problems with it last yr and at the start of this year)...and remember this is in essence his "rookie" season as a regular...while Japan baseball is like AAA/MLB like... Korean baseball is closer to AA/AAA...  wonder how much better he will be when he figures it all out..

Freddy (Jankowski) has cleared waivers and has elected FA. According to MLBTR, Players have to be in an organization (although not on a 40-man roster) by September 1 to be eligible for postseason play. So with that being said, and with Grishams up and down performance both at the plate and in CF, would it not be prudent to grab Freddy and have him in the pocket for that late inning defensive replacement in CF.

Always loved his speed and grit.

In a perfect world, Tatis would say to himself, I am going to work on being the best OFer I can be, and leave SS to Kim.

In all honesty, dont you think with Tatis speed, athleticism, arm, and power, he could become the best CFer in ML maybe as soon as next season.

The Padres only have 39 players on the active roster .... so the first off the 60 day is covered. Then likely Stammen goes on the 60 day to cover the second coming off. Looking like the first two will be Beaty and Tatis.

Pomeranz may be a few weeks out ... and that will generate a DFA (or a new 60 day pops up). Johnson may not be ready until Sept and since he is a FA to be might just get released.

Liked Jankowski but he just can't hit ... pass.

Probably "best" that quickly is too optimistic but becoming a quality defensive CF is a legit thought. Kim has developed enough in 2022 to warrant holding a ML starting SS position ... and probably a good value at $7MM.

A lot of ways to go but shouldn't discount the option of trading Kim (arguably a Top 10 SS at a low cost) to a SS needy club that is not going to pursue one of the elite FA SS. Clears some payroll space for other Padre FA signings ... Tatis goes "home" to SS and back-up falls to Rosario (doing very well in AAA).

With Bell, Profar, Drury, Clevinger, Manaea likely FA juggling re-signing them (or signing replacements) may require moving some salary from others ... to come up with the best roster / payroll mix.
