2022 Season

I hope we bring back all of our starters ( except Snell!) next year. It's the best part of our team and the reason we're still in the hunt.

Hopefully Morejon can replace Snell in the 7 man group.

Money dictates that wont happen. Say good bye to Manaea and Martinez.

Martinez has a player option....so it's up to him.

Hopefully it's not "goodbye Manaea and Clevinger"!

We went through this before but forgot were we ended up on Martinez’s contract.

Player options for each year 23-24-25 at $6.5MM but each also has a $1.5MM buyout … and I take to mean if Martinez exercises the player option the Padres can give him $1.5MM to go away. If he declines the option, no cost to the Padres.

Good chance the way he has pitched … Martinez does opt out to get maybe similar money but without the buyout condition. BUT if he does not:

would (should) the Padres buy him out? With what may be a CBT issue, is Martinez worth that $5MM difference vs using that to fund other signings? Have to make that call right after the season … and well before the FA landscape is clear. Not sure on any rule issues but if does opt in … Padres could still trade him and he would have value.

It starts with his choice, but if he opt in … would keep him in the mix at that $6.5MM.

My guess we would keep him if he is to be a big part of the rotation.

If we lose Manaea and or Clevinger.

If Snell and/or Gore are traded.

If injury strikes.

Fernando Tatis Jr. is with the team in New York. He’s progressed to swinging at flips, and says he’s taking his “A” swing with no soreness.

Myers is playing 1B for the Chihuahuas.

Melvin is going to have some interesting line-up decisions once Tatis and Myers return … and have to assume they will be somewhere near their “normal” … maybe not at first but get there over the 2 months.

For reference based on 2021 OPS splits:

Tatis: 875 (H) / 1069 (A) … 978 (v R) / 968 (vL)

Myers: 762 (H) / 772 (A) … 746 (v R) / 828 (v L)

Looking at the current roster … so drastic H/A and R/L splits on some of the players. Consider:

Kim: 562 (H) / 809 (A) … 583 (v R) / 893 (v L) … IF Tatis returns at SS, Melvin needs to get Kim in the line-up vs LHP and in Away games.

Voit: 664 (H) / 777 (A) … 805 (v R) / 547 (v L) … Clearly an opportunity for Kim or Myers to DH v LHP and maybe Myers at Home vs RHP.

Grisham: 629 (H) / 635 (A) … 606 (v R) / 691 (v L) … under performing in all aspects and maybe Ruiz can be better is some scenarios but here is where Tatis paying in CF vs LHP might be a consideration. Kim stays at SS and Myers at DH with Tatis in CF could elevate the team offense vs. LHP. Note Mazara (although small sample size) is doing fine vs LHP (and maybe this is where Ruiz helps).

Although I don’t see Melvin messing around with Cronenworth … his L v R splits are fine but Home (550) vs Away (884) is worth noting. On the other hand, as much as he is criticized, Hosmer is over 700 in all four of the splits.

Melvin will have some interesting line-up calls.

Never know how history translates to future performance but I wonder how much more valuable Alfaro and Cronenworth would be if they played the Home games away from PETCO in a better hitter’s environment.

Alfaro: .600 OPS (H) v .907 OPS (A) … in a world of poor hitting catchers … a better Home OPS would make him a All-Star. Should be interesting after next year when he becomes a FA and he will still be in his 20s.

Cronenworth: .550 OPS (H) v .884 OPS (A) … and he is already an All-Star. Three more years of control so good for the Padres but have to wonder how his career would be viewed nationally if he too played in a better home hitting environment.

Yeah imagine Cronenworth in Yankee stadium and Alfaro in Fenway.
