2022 Season

PreviousPage 44 of 87Next

The hits have been there almost every game during this stretch... the hits with RISP have not... they bit us again in the Butt yesterday...

Not to freak out or anything ..but sending Grishman down to AAA and adding Estury Ruiz to the 40 and letting him play CF from 7/7 to the Deadline 100+ ABs .. would be a WIN WIN situation... #1 I don't think Ruiz would be as poorly on Offense or Defense as Grishman has been..#2 Ruiz "terror on the bases" energizes the offense tremendously and puts added "stress" on Opponents SP..#3 His knack of getting on (OBP ) almost guarantees 1 and sometimes 2 runner on 2B (RISP) per game... vs Grishman who doesn't....

I think AJP needs to make this move today... what if Ruiz doesn't slow down at the MLB level and cements CF for a decade? We don't need to empty the system for ONE Reynolds.... we could simply add other pieces Josh Bell/Contreras and/or Mancini while holding to all of our top specs..or at least 4 of 5...

The call-up of Ruiz has to be a big debate issue in the Padres' front office. Certainly we fans see impressive performance out of Ruiz in the minors but what is in the minds of the development folks?

Making space on the 40 man is not a big issue if you think he will contribute now to winning (will add him over the winter anyway). Even if it is a part time with Grisham, he has a shot of being more valuable than Azocar. Basically need to see some ML work before the trade deadline for a better assessment of that deadline need.

Padres probably don't want to make a knee-jerk reaction on Grisham given the unknowns around Ruiz and Azocar but how long can you remain with him in a playoff race without testing potentially better options (or at least not worse). Consider in 2022, Grisham among the 19 "qualified" CF in MLB:

17th in WAR (0.5)

19th in BA (.186)

16th in OBP (.285)

18th in SLG (.331)

14th in dWAR (-0.4) ... and that was his supposed strength

Yeh, time for the Ruiz test (Azocar down). The last week of July we should see the return of Myers and Tatis (think both will boost the offense) but need to know where we stand Grisham v Ruiz by then to structure the roster to accommodate their returns and/or determine who is expendable via trade.

How can you say Myers Boosts the Offense ?? (Unless you mean as a vs LhP platoon partner for Mazara... cause Nomar is putting up #'s in RF that Myers can only dream of... (sarcasm..but close)

Easy to say it … just hard being correct.

Myers is usually around an average hitter (just above 100 wRC+) over the course of a season … that should be better than Azocar and would provide a RHH complement to Hosmer / Mazara. Also need to consider that Profar and Mazara are unlikely to play every day (rest / injury) for the remaining 80 games. Sliding Myers in instead of Azocar or ??? … upgrade.

Wil has a .759 career OPS against righties and a .793 against lefties. Mazara is at .769 and .633 for his career. Mazara is at .756 in a small sample size this year and they're clearly trying to shield him from lefties though he has done well in a tiny 10 PA sample. Wil is the better defender as well. Wil in all likelihood will be given the shot to be the everyday guy and get back on track when he returns. If his struggles continue it probably becomes a platoon.

A good note from closermonkey.com ...

San Diego Padres — Quick, which Padres reliever has the most saves since June 20? If you said Nick Martinez, you’d be right. Martinez recorded another 3 inning save last night. Martinez now has 3 saves and a win in 6 appearances out of the bullpen, which is a remarkable decision rate, however he is more likely to end up back in the rotation than he is to consistently see save and hold chances.

Hierarchy remains: Rogers | Garcia | Crismatt.

Any idea what happened to KIM... he was pulled from last night's game (I know he had a finger/thumb issue) but seems a bit more serious No?.. today's lineup vs a lhp whom KIM rakes against has Grisham leading off.. Manny DHing.. and Batten 3B /Rooker LF and Azocar RF with CJ at SS... 3 rookies (not sure Rooker is one ..if yes 4 rookies) starting on a playoff contender is something....

I wondered too after he had been out with the finger/thumb injury since Monday.

“It had been better the last couple days,” manager Bob Melvin said. “That last at-bat is when he felt it again.” -- Shaun O'Neill"

Left thumb so not impacting his throwing but clearly his hitting. No idea if they did an X-Ray but at this point any injury that takes him out of the mix hurts. If it is the type that just reoccurs under the stress of a swing unless fully healed ... the ideal IL recovery is going to be difficult given the "next up" options until the All-Star break. Have to go with Abrams against LHP ... not ideal.

Batten has SS ability.. expand his role a bit..probably not Alcantara with the glove/arm BUT in all likelihood >bat than Azocar And/or CJ bs lhp??

I like what I've seen from him (very limited playing time) a hit a BB some key defense and instinctual baserunning ... could be an early audition for a KIM type role post Tatis return/offseason planning for 2023 or even for a way fwd to add a bat at the deadline by sending KIM elsewhere in a trade... he has been a big Glue guy in 2022 so maybe not "the move" (rock the boat) that should be made in a playoff race.. but either way Batten time to continue carving a niche role for (if not the rest of this season) 2023...

The middle INF will probably be sorted during the winter once a better understanding as to where Tatis ends up (OF or SS) … if Hosmer opts out (Cronenworth to 1B?) … if Abrams finishes strong (or AAA in 2023) … if Batten finishes strong enough to hold a ML back-up role … if Rosario keeps hitting in AAA and becomes a legit INF candidate.

We know what Kim is … excellent defense and hits LHP at the ML level and that has Padre value for now given the unknowns about all the others. Hard to move him without knowing how healthy Tatis is (and the concern on relapse) before the trade deadline.

Scenario 1: Machado - Tatis - Cronenworth - Hosmer in 2023 (Rosario / Batten bench) … Kim traded … OF ????

Scenario 2: Machado - Kim - Abrams - Cronenworth in 2023 (Rosario / Batten bench) … Tatis in OF

Scenario 3: something completely different
