2022 Season

PreviousPage 39 of 87Next

While most of the bullpen has gotten better as the has season moved on, Craig Stammen has gone the other way and seemingly is now more in a mop-up role than pitching any critical innings.  Crismatt has taken over the role Stammen had and Stammen hasn't been a high leverage arm for several seasons.  Is he injured or just reached the end of the line?  Maybe time to bow out gracefully, which he probably will do anyway at the end of 2022.  A great team player and role model but baseball is a business.  Let's see what happens when the other bullpen arms are ready.

Probably the end of the line. FA after the season and could see him “retire” into the Padres’ front office …good guy / good community presence.

It would be painful for both Stammen and the Padres given their relationship to release him mid-season … but possible given his performance. Maybe go directly to the front office.

I can see AJP trading him to a team like the Orioles ..as a throw in(say for Mancini) to not just save his $$ but more so to just not waive him.. he could end his season teaching the young guys on the Orioles the ropes..before joining the Pads FO in the offseason... Kinda a classy way to say goodbye vs cutting him..

“Don't expect Tatis to perform at All-Star levels when he returns”

Why?

“Don't expect Tatis to perform at All-Star levels when he returns”

Why?

“Expect” should be the key word in my view. A caution that suggests the line-up still should be set-up to cover in case he returns on a ramp up pace. A bit depends on “when he returns” and the game condition swings he gets in prior.

He is a super natural athlete … but he has an injury (will it be fully healed) and he has not swung a bat in anger for months. Timing, pitch recognition, endurance all COULD impede his return to peak performance. He may be “working out” but really he will be just entering ST when released to swing a bat. So time needed may not coincide with his return date.

In my opinion, we should temper our expectations for the reasons Fenn68 stated above.  This is not to say that Tatis won't return to his All-star level performance, but that it might take some time to get there provided he does not suffer a recurrence of the wrist injury or the shoulder injuries that previously sidelined him.  Hitting a baseball is one of the most difficult things to do, especially with the impact and barrel explosiveness we've seen from Fernando, but he is not a robot.  I hope, first of all, that he remains healthy for the rest of the season.  Secondly, I'll take whatever percentage of the "normal" Fernando we can get because he is that good and will be that good for many years to come.  This period of absence should be a wake-up call to him that he cannot health for granted and must do those things that Manny does to remain in great shape and not take unnecessary risks, like motorcycle riding or playing basketball or soccer that can hurt the team that needs his presence in the line-up to be a top contender yearly.

My question was based on the fact that he has missed large chunks of time 3-4 times in his short career already and each time he “immediately”returned at an All Star level.

Will he this time…..maybe not.

But there is no precedent when it comes to this kid to think he won’t.

Maybe it is a hot streak against lesser completion, maybe it is players with poor Apr/May “normalizing” to expectations, but the past 30 days have been strong offensively for the Padres. Will it last? If the hitting lasts for the next 5 weeks, does that lower the pressure for a deadline deal? Consider over the past 30 days (OPS by player):

OF: Profar (852); Grisham (771); Mazara (746); Azocar (820); all are above league average … and Myers should return in August +/-.

INF: Machado (786); Kim (653); Cronenworth (898); Hosmer (600); Voit (832) … and Tatis should return August +/- sending Kim to a bench role

C: Alfaro (1007); Nola (771)

That is pretty good except for Hosmer … but we know he goes hot / cold so maybe plus with Myers back he may be a RHH alternative at 1B.

With pitching being the primary Padre advantage … this offense (if it continues) should be enough to make (and succeed) in the playoffs.

Sort of suggests that the minor bench deals may be less probable and a “major add” may only happen if it is a “good deal” for the Padres.

This stretch of games before the All-Star break is critical to the Padres' post-season chances and we really need the offense to step up, particularly against SF and in Colorado.  If we can go 10-6 from today (1 July through 17 July), we should be in excellent shape for the second half, particularly if we win the SF series.  It is going to be a tough road ahead, but Darvish, Manaea and Musgrove are healthy.  We need strong performances from Clevinger and Gore and get some timely contributions from Cronenworth, Grisham, Nola and Kim to make this work.

Not expecting Tatis back until after the All-Star break but Manny, Hosmer, Alfaro, Profar, Mazara and Voit could keep the offense afloat with the other guys I mentioned chipping in.  Chance we might get Wilson and Morejon back during this stretch, which should help the RP corps.  Most of the major reinforcement pieces won't be ready until late July, so current team has to suck it up and perform like they have for most of the season so far.  Not an easy stretch, but certainly possible - focus on just winning one day/game at a time.  I'm looking for pop-up unexpected contributors during this stretch - my picks are Batten and Stammen.  Go Padres!
