With Darvish going opening day in Arizona and Musgrove apparently opening at home against Atlanta, it looks like we'll try to piggy-back between those pitchers who have shown length. Therefore, I'm predicting we go Darvish, Clevinger+Gore in the 2nd game, Musgrove, Snell+Paddack in the 4th game and then open the SF series with Martinez, Darvish and then Clevinger+Gore. That way Musgrove is set up for the home opener with Atlanta. This puts a lot on Martinez but he is a "veteran" and looks fully capable of going 5-6 innings from the outset of the season. The DH really makes it a lot easier to have piggy-back starters.
If the piggy-backs work as they should, it would give our RP's more time to bounce back and fewer back to back appearances even though we'll have 8 or 9 of them. Still have some fragile arms out there so it is best to be cautious.

This is where the 2 extra roster spots really help the Padres.
We have a little time anyway to help these guys build up some and to see if any injuries pop up either to the Starters or the Pen.
I’m not so sure we use Gore as a piggy back option though?
Would they feel this could limit the progress he’s made by basically being in the Pen and only pitching sparingly?
I was thinking Weathers would be the LH PB guy with Gore starting the season in AA?
I realize Gore has pitched great…..but would they at this point in both of their progressions demote Weathers and promote Gore at the same time?
I mean…..they certainly could.

Looks like Bumgarner will be Arizona's opening day pitcher, so I expect we'll see Voit at 1b, Alfaro at DH and Nola at C vice Caratini. Likely Grisham will still lead off and Cronenworth will be in the top 5 as the only true left handed bats facing Bumgarner. Machado probably hits in the #2 spot. Myers, Profar and Kim round out the opening day line-up barring any last minute unexpected trades or injuries. Hopefully, Darvish won't have his usual opening day jitters and the middle of our line-up does some damage. Sure would like to get that first win under our belts on opening day! We need to have a good series against Arizona to get that bad end of 2021 taste out of our mouths.

This is the Padres … even money we don’t hear the ML opening day roster until the last minute … that could be early in the morning on opening day.

Not a lot of intrigue.....mainly curious about Abrams.
I'd also like to see Azocar get the 4th/5th OF spot...this would require another 40 man opening right?

Yep, both Azocar (who would be a decent defensive insurance in the OF) and Abrams are non-roster.
One “easy” move is Tatis to the 60 day IL to clear one 40 man spot. Baring a trade that does not return a roster player, a DFA would be needed for the second slot and there are candidates. This is where I usually say Guerra but with the expand roster to 28 and the arms injured … maybe not. Sort of then falls to Tyler who the Padres picked up of waivers a few weeks back and sent to EP.
Still wouldn’t rule out a complex Preller trade(s) in the next two days … netting down one roster player. Alfaro / Caratini should have some trade value (and cost $2-3MM each).

A prediction I saw only showed 4 outfielders making the roster.....Grish/Myers/Beaty/Profar...but they also predicted 3 Catchers.
I just don't see it.
Gotta keep Nola and Alfaro.....but surely we need another outfielder before a 3rd Catcher?
