2022 Season
Quote from WindsorUK on May 16, 2022, 12:47 pmUh.....Next game Oct. 5???? Not sure I want to wait that long🤣
Edit: never mind. Must have been a glitch. It was showing every teams next game as October 5th. They obviously noticed it and corrected accordingly.

On CBS the guy who writes the power rankings basically implied that SD should try and get Josh Bell, 1B/DH type guy, and a FA after the season. I dont see WAS doing much this season, as they are already 12 games under .500.
What would it take to get Bell out of WAS?? Would WAS be interested in Voit, same 1B/DH guy, except for this season, their career numbers in BA, OBP, and OPS+ are very similar, and Voit is under contract for two more years.
So Voit and lotto ticket MiL for Bell?
IF Bell is hitting at the All-Star break … WASH probably could get a solid prospect from some team worth a lot more than Voit and a “lotto ticket”. WASH has no payroll issue (so dumping Bell”s prorated $10MM contract is probably irrelevant) plus most of their team are FA after the season so players (prospects) that have value for 5-6 years would be more appealing.
Preller will probably not give up on Voit … yet … and then he is more likely a non-tender type next winter. If he is that bad … not sure any team will take him. He would have to be very bad for a Padres’ non-tender (he is at $5.5MM) since Myers is a FA and (yes it is possible) Hosmer opts out. Next winter the Padres will be looking for more bats … and dealing Voit for a FA to may counter productive.
More likely Preller is going all out to add an OF (not many to choose from) and someone with multi-year control.

Quote from fenn68 on May 16, 2022, 4:53 pmNoticed the Scott Boras promo release that Conforto may be back for September … hitter only. (Not expected to be able to throw until the winter). Pretty sure Boras wants the league see that Conforto is well on the mend to start negotiation a bigger deal next winter.
At that point in the season he is unencumbered by the QO compensation … so just a normal FA signing.
At what point (and for what cost) would Preller take a gamble on Conforto for September? Would Preller make an offer for 2022 AND 2023 considering the departure of Myers and the struggles of Profar / Grisham … Padres will have some big OF holes and Conforto WAS an quality LH bat?
Good chance no team will go big multi-year after the injury filled 2022 … so a “fair” one year deal to build value might appeal to to Conforto.

Quote from fenn68 on May 17, 2022, 2:57 pmOK, we are now just past the 1/5th of the season post ... so still a long way to go for all the teams so don't expect any radical movements ... just yet.
For the Padres, the good is that they have the 4th best record in all the NL (7th best in MLB) and have been tucked into that first wild card slot for some time. Only one NL team has fewer losses than the Padres' 13 losses and that is the LAD at a close 12. On the other end, the Padres have 5 fewer loses than the first team out of the wild cards. Basically that have been good.
Should also note that they are .500 vs teams with winning records but only four teams are greater than .500 ... NYY, LAD, NYM, and HOU. So not that bad.
However as a long suffering fan ... need to climb that wall of worry. SP / defense / Machado and Hosmer have been carrying them but how long can that carry the worst offensive OF in MLB? RP has been shaken but could be bailed out eventually with the return of Pomeranz, Johnson, and Castillo ... so not the top priority worry.
Even with the return of Tatis eventually helping the overall offense, the OF still should be addressed. May have to rely on Myers to get hot but getting to the point that upgrades for Grisham and Profar are needed. No "easy" given: a) not a lot of impact OF on the market; b) Padres are bumped against the payroll cap; c) Padres don't have a lot of prospect capital to offer a rebuilding team for a major bat and a contender is not likely to move a key piece of their line-up.
Maybe Preller either focuses on a "rental" for a mid range prospect(s) or maybe does something creative in a 3 way deal using a SP to a contender who sends prospects to a rebuilding team who in turn sends a key bat to the Padres. Probably would have to be Darvish or Snell who should carry the most trade value.

Quote from Randy Manese on May 17, 2022, 3:26 pmIt's not the best scenario, but I kind of like where we are with our hitters. Sure Machado and Hosmer will cool off, but I have to believe we are going to get more from the other guys, just as we've seen lately. Abrams will be back probably by the second half of the year and Campusano may come up sooner. Those two guys plus Tatis, could help us keep doing what we have been doing - winning primarily with pitching and defense. Love to have an all-star line-up like the Dodgers, but this is San Diego and we don't have that kind of money. Myers and others know they may be playing for their next team, so now is the time to show they still have something in the tank. So, keep the starters healthy, get those needed complements to the bullpen, and let's hope for the best without trading away our future.

Quote from fenn68 on May 17, 2022, 3:43 pmI have my doubts about Campusano and Abrams being significant contributors in 2022 … great prospects, yes, but based on the ML work so far not looking for them in 2022. Given the EP stats are just nothing to project from.
I do expect Myers to heat up and be Myers (at least an average offensive weapon and combining with a better Voit (also expect that) plus the return of even a Tatis at 80% offense should get better.
On the other hand, not that sure on Grisham or Profar giving more than defense. That with the added offense might get the Padres into the playoffs but not sure against daily playoff level pitching that will get it done. Probably need one OF offensive upgrade … and a “rental” should be the cheapest way to go when it comes to dealing prospects if the Padres will take on some payroll.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on May 17, 2022, 10:17 pmWill Tatis be willing to play CF ? This would solve a lot of ? ....
Still targets that should be available
OF Benintendi
DH JD Martinez
Both would cost a top 10ish spec and a lower one.. think Mears +
I kind of don't want to bring in more than 1 OFer and with a bare FA OF class I mean Comforto?? Gallo/Benintendi and Myers are the top available this coming offseason..I dont want to commit to more than one (if any) on a long term basis
We have Harrell/Wood are STUDS a yr or 2 away..and Abrams or Tatis will likely be in the mix too... our OF is in transition atm... But Tatis Jr in CF would answer so many questions and at the same time protect his shoulder... Kim is an All Star level SS (or at least proving to be one).. keeping Tatis in the grass makes us a better team..But will Tatis like this??? If he wants to win he should...
Going after a guy like Reynolds (young controlled) makes a ton of sense too..but the price is sky high... so I think the best move is something like Benintendi LF .. and Profar to the bench......

Quote from fenn68 on May 18, 2022, 5:59 amWell, Tatis COULD develop into a quality OF … eventually … but based on his brief appearances in the OF in 2021 he has a long way to go defensively … basically he looked bad on reading the ball off the bat, taking routes, even just catching the fly ball … add that I doubt he has enough experience to know when to make throws (e.g. cut-offs, etc.).
Padres are in a playoff race … not the optimum time to experiment. Then after missing 3 months, not sure Tatis retuning to the ML at a totally new position add adding the demand for learning that position would benefit his effort to return to his offensive contribution.
Better chance that Tatis returns to SS and Kim moves to 2B with Cronenworth getting work in LF and Profar goes “super utility”. Not the optimum solution but …
Now in 2023 … maybe after working with Tatis in the OF over the winter / ST he shows up in the OF and Kim secures SS. Just don’t see the Padres being eager to move their #1 asset off of his showcase position of SS … where is is at least OK defensively but provides a real source of fan excitement on an ongoing basis vs getting obscure in the OF.

Quote from fenn68 on May 18, 2022, 9:39 amIn case you missed it the Padres now have the 2nd best winning percentage in the NL and remain only one game in the loss column behind LAD.
Plus the Padres are a full 7 games ahead of the first team out of the playoff hunt (AZ). It still is early but beginning to look as though the top 6 teams in the NL (the playoff teams) are beginning to pull away from the pack. If that continues ... Padres may have a different approach to the trade deadline if they are not focusing on a roster to get into the playoffs but. roster to compete in the playoffs.
