A long shot move … but the Mets just put Robinson Cano on waivers. Yes, he is old and performing poorly in 2022 … had a PED suspension in 2021 … but before that he was still very productive still at this age. LHH DH type these days but could be an upgrade over Beaty from the left side in part time use. Reports are that he is a good club house guy.

No one will claim him because of his contract and Mets will be on the hook for the money. Once he clears waivers a team could sign him for a prorated league minimum.

So if the Padres signed him it is virtually an all upside move and no real cost and could provide some LHH upgrade (over Beaty) and provide some insurance in Voit’s injury lingers. If it did not workout … an easy release.

However, in the short run, they have to add Myers and Voit soon and if they also added Cano … three of the 26 man need to be reduced. One pitcher likely then maybe Beaty (optioned) and Thompson (DFA) leaving Azocar as the OF back-up.

So, not likely given the roster construction and having Voit / Hosmer with little versatility.

Not a Chance.....way to much baggage and diva mentality....I vote NO

I mean if he wanted to come here on a minor league deal I would be ok with it. There's no real risk since at most you're paying him the minimum salary if he makes his way onto the team. It would just be trying to catch lightning in a bottle. He's not really a great roster fit though.

While the rain out is a bummer since I’m still at home recuperating I’m looking forward to 6 hours of Padre baseball tomorrow.

Cant complain about that!

Just a side comment.

I listened to the Padres radio pre-game show today and they have added a new host for 2022 (also apparently will do the post-game) … he is very good and professional.

Sam Levitt … 30 years old who had been a play-by-play radio announcer for a few years and most recently with the Amarillo Sod Poodles.

He has “the voice” and approaches the pre-game with the intent of informing with facts on all the current team issues … he clearly does his homework on the team and what is happening in baseball .. and that includes the Padres minors.

He is the best pre-game host that I can remember in recent years … I would keep a lookout for him to emerge as a radio play by play host for the Padres in the future.

May 4: RHP Pedro Avila recalled from Triple-A as 27th man
Avila, who made two starts for the Padres from 2020-21, will instead work as a reliever behind a rotation strengthened by Mike Clevinger's return on Wednesday. Avila has allowed three runs (two earned) in four innings this season and can offer long relief should San Diego need it in its doubleheader in Cleveland on Wednesday. -- Jake Crouse

How much more patience can we have with Tim Hill? 7 runs, 11 hits, 3 bb in 5.2 ip... He's been absolutely atrocious and I haven't seen a glimmer of hope at all in any of his appearances. He's hardly the only problem with our bullpen (looking at you Suarez and Lamet) but Hill has been particularly bad.

Snell wasn't as sharp as he was with Ft. Wayne against today's Lo A batters.  He did have a lot of swing/miss (18) that accounted for 7 of his 8 K's but he also got hit hard by a line-up of all RH hitters.  One out was caught against the rightfield wall, while 2 were hit hard off that same wall.  One was blasted over the left field fence and the other hard hit was a line-drive to right.  There were 12 foul balls for strikes and only 3 called strikes, 1 for a K.  Usually missed down and in but had a few that sailed high over the top of the plate.  Didn't hear a velocity reading but it seemed down from Ft. Wayne - threw a lot of breaking balls, but that may have been by design.  Did get his pitch count to 66, but I'd like to see another dominant performance or at least a more efficient performance before inserting him back in the rotation.

Only 25 games in and the RP just have not pitched that much ... so will give Hill some slack given his history since his current issue seems to be control/command. Suarez was supposed to be a good command arm ... he too is having command issues, so we will see. Both could work out their issues and be effective. Then consider there is not much around as upgrades for the pen except for wishful thinking on arms that could not make the roster.

Lamet is the one I am concerned about ... did not pitch much last year ... has only gone 6.2 innings this year with his last 3 appearances being ineffective. Given the rumor was the Padres were in trade discussions for Lamet and have not been using him as a go to guy (before yesterday had not pitched for a week) ... have the feeling that the Padres are close to moving on from him. At some point the Padres will have to reduce some pitchers (May 29 and the return of Snell / Johnson). Lamet may be the first out the door (has a minor league option). Not sure they can trade him (and his contract) given his recent lack of work / effectiveness. Too bad considering his potential but at age 29 and only controlled through 2023 ... looks past his use by date. If not dealt in 2022 a good non-tender next winter given his contract.
