2022 Season

I suspect they can nurse the injuries to Voit and Myers for some time pushing off another move until they have a better sense of the bats remaining on the 26 man.

However, not sure what to do with Abrams ... not ready for the ML with his bat ... and not sure on an available upgrade to cover middle INF if Kim starts. This may dovetail well with a minor trade (as other teams also reduce rosters) fringe pitcher for a veteran back-up INF allowing Abrams to be optioned.

Returnees from the 60 day IL will at some point be an issue when coupled with the potential of adding a non-roster player. Morejon and Baez can be worked in AZ for some time (if the Padres want) and then go on a 30 day rehab ... that might get them activated (and optioned in June). Tatis maybe July. That is 3 40 man roster slots needed in mid-season. Don't expect Adams to return and no idea what to think about Pomeranz ... both also in the 60 day.

So if they want to add a Castillo also to the 40 man ... might need to do some strategic paring now (maybe via trade or a DFA that can sneak through give the other teams in similar situations).

Remember this is Preller, so maybe we something "bigger" in the next few months rather than my nibbling on the fringe of players.

A trade must be brewing, right?

Any candidates?

Dennis Lin just tweeted that we're discussing Lamet with other teams.

Dennis Lin just tweeted that we're discussing Lamet with other teams.

That would make some sense given the way the have been using Lamet, his marginal effectiveness in 2022, his injury history, and his contract. However, with two control years (and an option) might be appealing to some RP needy team.

Would not get much in return but if they can clear a 40 man slot and open payroll space for a future add … would not mind a non-roster prospect. Maybe just get a decent veteran middle INF allowing Abrams to be sent down.

Saw the note on MLBTradeRumors that the Padres and Musgrove were in extension discussions … that part made a lot of sense.

What did not is the report had the Padres offer at 8 years with an $11MM AAV. Considering he is already just under $10MM via arbitration … and is pitching at an upper rotation level … that is about half what he should get as a FA for AAV (maybe not 8 years but the same dollars in less time). Maybe a typo and it is a $21MM AAV or the $11MM reflects only 2023 and not the AAV.

A report that just does not make sense.

Avila and Campusano to AAA getting the active roster down to 26.

Should see another move before Tuesday’s game when Clevinger is activated to start. (Note Melvin has said Gore will pitch on Wednesday … so not him). Also, for now, Martinez will stay starting … so a 6 man rotation effectively.

In a couple of weeks we should see Snell and Johnson returning … so more to come with the pitchers. Plus at 14 on the active staff … not sure when the league reverts back to the 13 pitcher max.

I believe Forum contributor Jeremy Hill reported that the 14 pitcher limit would be in effect until 29 May.  This seems to work fine for the Padres if you look into the schedule through mid-May.  If we finish the road trip with Clevinger and Gore, this sets up the Miami/Cubs homestand with Martinez, Darvish and Manaea followed by Musgrove, Clevinger and Gore.

Probably send down Kerr to keep the pitcher number at 14 when we activate Clevinger unless there is a RP that needs to go on IL, which is now 15 days vice 10.  For that reason, Kerr the likely candidate unless we have a lingering unreported RP injury that is just not getting better.  OR - at trade?

The schedule then takes us on the road to Atlanta/Philly/SF where we can start Darvish, Manaea and Musgrove in Atlanta followed by Clevinger, Gore and Martinez in Philly.  That brings us to SF where we again throw our 3 best starters - Darvish, Manaea and Musgrove.  This gets us all the way through 22 May.

Somewhere along the line, probably work in Snell.  I'm guessing taking the place of Martinez in Philly after one last rehab in the next few days.  Probably won't roster Snell until closer to his start but Pierce Johnson should be up as soon as he is able.  Suarez still trying to get over major league jitters but I think he will during May, so we need the reliable Johnson as a high leverage RP to go with Wilson and hopefully, Garcia.

Also sounding like Voit will be in EP tomorrow for a rehab and could be activated for Thursday’s game.

Next two weeks will have some roster shuffling … players optioned, traded, DFA, released, or put on the IL to make room for as many as five returning from the IL.

5/3. Clevinger returns … pitcher bumped (Kerr likely but maybe that Lamet trade)

5/5  Voit returns … bat bumped (Beaty, Azocar, or Thompson)

5/7  Myers (maybe given injury only a finger contusion) … another bat bumped?

5/9 Snell if he has only one more rehab or 5/14ish if two rehabs … another pitcher bumped

5/?  Johnson (reports are vague but needs some rehabs) … another pitcher bumped.

5/29 pitchers return to 13 max … pitcher bumped / hitter added

So potentially FOUR pitchers currently active will be gone by the end of the month. Kerr, Wilson, Crismatt, and Lamet have minor league options, so there is an escape route.
