2022 Season
Quote from Randy Manese on April 22, 2022, 2:00 pmScathing review of Gallo's performance thus far in "Bleeding Yankee Blue". Based on that and his career stats, don't think it's just "not the kind of guy that can adjust to New York" theory but rather declining skills even at his relatively young age (turned 28 last November). For that reason, retract my previous valuation that we may have to give up Campusano and a pitcher to get him. This, however, does not mean Preller won't but that Preller shouldn't. We don't need another black hole in the lineup or a part-time player at 10 Million.
I'd try to get a temporary fix to the current roster with an experienced middle infielder until Tatis returns and get Abrams some serious time in the outfield at El Paso. We need his speed and, after he makes the necessary adjustments, his on base and bat to ball skills in the line-up. When Abrams returns, he should be able to play all OF spots as well as SS and 2b. With a healthy Tatis and a better hitting Abrams could be very good as the year goes on especially if we can get the expected production from Cronenworth and Grisham - Manny and Nola should continue to be solid. Hosmer and Myers? It's a toss-up. Wild card - Profar. So, bottom line, would not trade for Gallo - let Azocar and Beaty continue to share time until Abrams is fully ready - I'm thinking around the same time as Tatis comes back, i.e., around the second week of June. Hopefully, our pitching and defense will continue to keep us competitive until then.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 22, 2022, 3:47 pmEno Sarris's response to me asking what his model thought about Gore's performance so far in the comments of an article he put up on The Athletic this morning.
The good news is that the fastball is above-average by shape and location. Model likes his slider too. Placing the slider really poorly, placing everything but the fastball poorly. But at least two good pitches by action, one by command, a chance that he improves the command on one of his secondaries, and two more show-me pitches in the change and curve. It's a good but not great beginning.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 22, 2022, 5:54 pmVery fair assessment. It's a slow process to regain everything Gore once had, although even in his best minor years there was some inconsistency with what is working beyond his FB on a particular day. If they are going to send him down, El Paso will be on the road in Sugar Land from 3-8 May and again in Oklahoma City/Round Rock from 17-22 May. That would at least get him out of high altitude venues to try to work on the curve and change-up, the latter would be really really nice to get right because of his FB, and improve his slider location. Before he gained a few mph's on his FB, it was his precise location that made him possibly a top of the rotation prospect.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 26, 2022, 9:34 amRosters are still going down to 26 on the 2nd, but they're going to allow 14 pitchers until the 29th. That gives us a little more time and maneuverability to figure out what we want to do pitching wise when Clevinger and Snell get back. I think Abrams probably gets sent down at least temporarily as a result.

04/28/22 San Diego Padres placed 1B Wil Myers on the 10-day injured list retroactive to April 27, 2022. Right thumb contusion. 04/28/22 San Diego Padres selected the contract of RF Trayce Thompson from El Paso Chihuahuas.

- Eric Hosmer upped his major league-leading batting average to .410 by going 2-for-2 with his second home run in two nights. He also walked twice and has reached base in eight consecutive plate appearances. He ranks second in the majors with a .463 on-base percentage, behind only Mike Trout’s .476.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 30, 2022, 1:00 amIt seems the Padres would want Gore to stay on his regular schedule and pitch against Cleveland on 3 May with Clevinger and Martinez piggy-backing on 4 May; this hopefully will save the bullpen for the 6 game home series against Miami and the Cubs. Don't think Snell will be back until the 2nd week of May, at the earliest, even though he seems healthy enough. Plans could change if any of the frontline starters (Darvish, Manaea or Musgrove) are having any health issues or our starting pitching gets hit hard in Cleveland.
We should be getting Pierce Johnson back soon and Jose Castillo is almost ready to replace/supplement Hill in the bullpen; because they need a roster spot for him he may be a slow promotion even though he is ready. I'd like to take a look a Kerr if we get a good enough lead in the Pittsburgh series but I don't think we can depend on him yet on a regular basis; probably down when Johnson comes back. Avila should be sent down when Clevinger comes up, however, Stammen and Hill just haven't been on their games so far, so maybe arm issues there that may have to be addressed by IL. I'm thinking Morejon and Baez will be getting some rehab work in very soon as potential guys that can go back and forth between El Paso and San Diego to help the pen.

Quote from fenn68 on April 30, 2022, 2:44 amWell 21 games into the season. Way too early to get overly excited about good or bad starts for teams and players.
Having said that, the Padres are sitting in 4th place in the Playoff picture right behind the three Division leaders (Mets, Dodgers, and Brewers). Actually they have the same record as the Brewers (14-7). The Mets have the best record at 15-6 ... so only one game better. Basically still a tight bunch.
Padres are doing the classic logic of beating up on the poor teams .... 10-1 vs AZ, CINN, and PITT ... and shooting for .500 vs the good teams ... 4-6 vs. ATL, LAD, SF ... and as of now LAD and SF would be in the playoffs.
Best I can say it that they have not shot themselves in the foot coming out the gate and have not become instant also rans.

The next few days should be interesting in roster shuffling. Monday they need to drop 2 from the active roster (but can keep 14 pitchers as I understand). If they go with 14 pitchers (I suspect they will) ... that may put Beaty in jeopardy (he has an option and has not performed) over Thompson who can at least cover CF if needed. Carrying only 12 position players should premium on versatility. Although Campusano has not hit the ground runnings ... so he may be an option. Avila (with an option) is probably the pitcher.
Gets a bit trickier with Clevinger's return ... would not be surprised with a RP going to the IL or even a "minor trade" off the 28 man roster. If not, Gore and Wilson have been too effective to send down, so probably Kerr.
That only buys them time until Snell returns ... on the surface that should mean Gore goes down but IF Gore has more effective ML starts his future is better served starting at the ML. I could see Lamet (has an option) at risk given how they have used him and his performance.
Can see the Clevinger / Martinez piggyback ... but hard to envision the piggyback for Snell (who will be a starter) unless it becomes Gore. Might take some tricky juggling but a Clevinger / Gore and a Snell / Martinez piggyback sets might be effective pairing LHP and RHP? Darvish, Musgrove, and Manaea holding the other three slots is pretty good depth assuming they all stay healthy and effective to their potential.
