2022 Playoff Roster
Quote from fenn68 on October 5, 2022, 11:53 amClevinger to IL ... Crismatt called up.
The key question ... does Clevinger have to serve the full 15 days IL before being activated?
Does appear (with the approval of the Commissioner) Dixon can be added to the playoff roster even if only added to the 40 man in September by using 60 day IL designation for Adams.

Quote from fenn68 on October 5, 2022, 2:05 pmMLBTR is saying they are waiting on a COVID test on Clevinger along with his knee acting up again. With limited roster slots … a less than full speed Clevinger may be out of all the playoffs.

For the pessimists among us … IF Clevinger does have COVID and pretty sure a number of other Padres are not vaccinated … COULD more Padres be tested, fail, and be out of the WC+ playoffs if that is the rule in the playoffs?

In CF Melvin (and a lot of others) are going out of their way to defend Grisham as the starting CF but looking at the last 30 days:
Grisham (43 AB) 116/136/209 ... OPS 345 ... 23K (over 50%) and 0 BB. I don't see how his defense overcomes that and in a 3 game series not a lot of time for him to turn-around. However,
Azocar (53 AB) is not much better with an OPS 575 but no power and lesser defense. So, the other option is
Myers (61 AB) has the best OPS on the team in the last 30 days at .947. That is a BIG difference in offense that should justify his defense.
Another use for Myers is playing ahead of Bell ... 1B/DH.
Bell only has a .598 OPS built on BB(.333 OPS) and little SLG(.265). Note Drury is doing fine with a .834 OPS.
Catcher will clearly be Nola based on his handling of Darvish/Snell and a decent .767 OPS, but the back-up may shift over
Campusano (23 AB) with a .870 OPS and be linked with Musgrove
Alfaro (17 AB) with a poor .498 OPS ... yes, missed time with the knee but has barely played since his return and really has had a poor post All-Star break ... mega K ratio.
Though call for Melvin.
I'll be surprised if Nola doesn't start every game in the series. If we advance maybe we'll see Alfaro or Campy get a start, but I think Nola is going to catch every inning he can handle. CF might be a tough call. If Bell was hitting like we expected him too it would be an easy choice to run Myers out there. With Bell struggling it's a tougher call. Myers and Drury need to be in the lineup. They could gamble on Bell getting going and put Myers in CF, but I expect we'll see Myers at 1B with Drury as the DH and Grisham in CF. If Grisham comes up in any kind of big situation early you pinch hit for him and Azocar takes over.

Probably right on the catching strategy.
Bell may become the key … neither he nor Grisham are hitting but based on history Bell has the better chance of upside and should get some time … at least as a LHH. Drury can go 1B/DH and Myers can go 1B/DH/OF … so ample choices to mix and match depending on the match-ups.
P.S. A nice gesture by Melvin and the Padres to allow Myers to come off the field (maybe for the last time as a Padre in SD) to the applause / appreciation of the fans. It was obvious Myers appreciated the effort.

How many of these dudes would even make our roster? Q, Naylor and Clase
Nice to see though as executives realize trading for Padres = likelihood of mlb talent results
