A friend of mine said ... FTJ may be the NL MVP ... but Jake is the Padres' MVP 🙂
With Melancon a close 2nd 🙂 (wow, those were 6 HUGE outs he got last night!!!)

Quote from fenn68 on August 22, 2021, 9:19 amCronenworth / Pham > Edwards / Renfroe / PTNL! Not often TB makes a bad deal. Renfroe lasted one season and off to Boston ... Edwards (still a top prospect) but in AA (speed and no power). Cronenworth an All-Star and Pham is Pham.
Some may call it good scouting by the Padres (bad evaluation by TB) but as I recall when Cronenworth arrived the debate was IF he would make the team as a reserve (and may be an emergency RP) ... so, does not seem anyone really understood Cronenworth's ceiling. His bat surprised me last season and this ... but his work at SS really surprised me recently. Four more years of control.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 22, 2021, 10:40 amRenfroe has had a nice bounce back season.

Obviously Tampa Bay gave up on Hunter a bit early. Edwards still a top 100 prospect, too.
Pham has been a bust, but we were fortunate( did ANYONE think Jake would be an All Star?) that Cronenworth has played to the level he has.
The trade worked out GREAT for us though.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 22, 2021, 2:18 pmWow....young Weathers just looks bad.
I'm not counting on him for anything the rest of the way.
Our starting pitching options decrease by the day.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 22, 2021, 2:25 pmAnd do we ever get the bad end of ball/strike calls!
Saw a stat where we're getting 2 out of every 3 bad calls. Which doesn't help since we're the most disciplined team in the league as well.

Quote from fenn68 on August 22, 2021, 2:47 pmNeed “effective” Darvish, Lamet, Paddack, Arrieta, and Strahm back if the Padres have any chance of making a final push. Problem is that none seem on track to show up quickly … maybe Darvish before Sept 1. Even with days off … bullpen days cannot sustain winning.
I looks as though the “long season” has gotten to Weathers as many guessed as he probably stretched his inning target. Don’t see much value in allowing him to get beat up for the rest of the season and would consider shutting him down as the others are activated.
At only 21 and minimal work above Low A prior to this season … still have the faith he will develop into a useful ML SP … but may have to have in develop more in the minors in 2022.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 22, 2021, 3:23 pmMay be a good idea to shut him down.
This year is pretty much over- no need to get him hurt at this point.
Short of a sweep of the Duds, we need to start planning our attack for 2022( can't imagine they'd allow Tingler to waste another season, either)

Quote from fenn68 on August 22, 2021, 4:49 pmI think 2022 boils down to having the current SP healthy (and effective) … they have the past results so the basic talent is there.
Darvish, Clevinger, Musgrove, Snell, Lamet all have All-Star pedigree (and capable of CY Young votes) … that COULD BE an elite starting 5. Plus Paddack would be still lurking for insurance along with a rested Weathers and potentially the emergence of Gore, Martinez, or Knehr .. and maybe Morejon. Note: I am more concerned about Rothchild’s handling of the staff than Tingler’s management style.
The starting line-up will be fine as will the pen … always want more but the core of the current crop (less Pham) should score enough if the pitching holds up.
======
Side: pending the new CBA, it appears the owners want to return to the 14 team playoff format and that could shape roster design to focus more on winning in the playoffs and less structuring to get one of two Wild Card slots (or Division). That could be good for the Padres given the LAD remain a power house (although expect SF to drop next year … as I did this year).
