2021 Season

PreviousPage 92 of 114Next

It seems like the Padres have struggled vs "good pitching" this season ... so the Marlins will be an interesting test ... as they have "good pitching" ... the kid starting for them tonight, Zach Thompson, has a 2.53 ERA this season ...

Back to back games of starters going 7 innings.  What the heck is going on here?!?!

Now, let’s get on a roll!!

I know most of us blew off the early season comment by the Padres that they were limiting the early season innings of the starters (as a consequence of the minimal work in 2020) so they can be sharper and go longer down the stretch. Well, looks as though they are actually following through with that plan.

Looks as though SF has put a dent into that plan getting them the NL West title but still may yield them the Wild Card slot and create a sharper staff for the playoffs. Doubt anyone saw the SF run early in the season sustaining this long with no end in sight (see how they handled the NL Central leading MILW last week).

How in the world are the Giants continuing to win????

They should have dropped off the planet weeks ago.

All these games between the Giants,Dodgers and Padres are going to be fun and interesting.

I just hope they are also good for us.

We have to win a minimum of 2 of 3 from each to even have a chance to get the home field for WC and 3 of 4 to have a chance at the division.

We need a healthy Tatis(and everyone else) and the "Big 3" to keep pitching like they have recently.

Beginning to look like Weathers (who is only 21) needs to head to the minors for more refinement.

Today getting hit around as he was in the prior two starts. Padres, on one hand, can’t afford to roll him out and be ineffective in a pennant run. Problem is who steps in when you consider yesterday they needed a bullpen day.

They have said they are working Lamet back for the pen (but that may have to change) and hard to tell when Paddack returns (and will he be effective).

Can’t keep having these games where they get shut out and only a few hits.  Hard to put together a serious win streak when you have one of these every week.

Padres are sitting with Musgrove - Darvish - Snell holding SP slots #1-3 … but #4-5 needs to be addressed:

Weathers (thought he would be better) has really struggled in his last three starts … in zone command is way off missing spots by a 1-2 feet making his offerings very hittable;

Lamet … should return soon BUT every indication he is being worked to return in the pen and even if they shift him back to SP … how deep in games can he go / will he return to the IL;

Paddack … Padres seem to be waffling on when he returns but at best not for weeks … then consider he just was not effective when he was starting;

Knehr … prospect yes but has not shown he is ML quality yet (control issues).

Bullpen days … use two and the RP will just burn out (or just be ineffective)

Rest of the 40 man roster … bodies yes but someone we would want starting in a playoff run … and they need TWO to cover the 4th and 5th slots.

It is the home stretch for the season … Padres need to win games to HOLD the Wild Card slot and with TWO SP slots in question that may be a challenge.

Time to gamble and add Adrian Martinez (currently dominate in AA)? Pitching at the Wolff in SA is often misleading but his AWAY performance has been equally effective. Maybe?

Jake Arrieta was just placed on waivers by the Cubs.  ERA in the 6s now, but may be worth a flier to fill some of the innings we need?

Can't be worse than burning out our bullpen with Weathers ineffective and no 5th starter.  On a 1 year 6 million dollar contract this season.

I don't love the idea, but not a lot of options right now 🙁

I think I saw a stat where after a good start to the season he has given up 58 run in his last 58 innings. Watched part of his start a day or so ago and he had nothing and got bombed ... hard pass on him.

If needed would just go back to Knehr, Camarena or Crismatt (not worse than Arrieta these days) and consider the call-up of Martinez.

As AJ said making a move at the deadline wouldn't have been enough if the rest of the staff didn't pitch well.

However,if the top 3 can continue to excel then adding one innings eater would have really helped.

Of course,I don't think AJ was planning on losing Paddack or having Weathers struggle so much after he was so good for the first few months.

But that's the very reason maybe he should have added a Davies or another starter that wouldn't have cost us one of the top 4.

The Dodgers lost May and Bauer and still had 4-5 good starters but that didn't stop them from adding.....maybe we should have got Duffy instead of letting them considering the cost was just a PTBNL?
