With Monday off … the starts for Musgrove, Snell, and Paddack come with an extra day rest and then next Friday Darvish could start on normal rest. So the next “open” start would be next Saturday then the slot would come up again the following Thursday. After that the All-Star break re-sets every thing.

So the call may be right to the wire depending on how heavily the pen was used next Tuesday - Friday … the perception of Lamet’s return date … and the perception of the return dates for Pomeranz / Johnson.

It is still possible (maybe unlikely) Lamet could return for that 2nd start (although likely to keep him out and use the extra time from the All-Star break for recovery.

If the Padres’ plan with Weathers was to manage his innings so he can be a factor later in the season … may not be the first option to recall him now.

Well Preller has to be on the phone with a shift in his priorities to adding a “reliable” SP.

Darvish and Musgrove are reliable workhorses … then: Snell and Paddack make their starts (maybe a bit of a question on length/quality). Weather is being innings managed. That group of five likely not pitch the innings to get them to the end of the season.

Minors do not have a SP ready for the ML in a pennant race.

Looking at Lamet, not sure he will be even available for the rest of the season … even if he returns good chance it is with major innings management and still will be a high injury risk. Hurt last October … went the non-surgical route and tried treatment / rehab … half way through 2021 and he still has an issue even with IL stints / controlled innings.

Shifting my priority from back-end RP to back-end SP.

Watching baseball more this year and I see A LOT of bonehead plays. No idea the reason- maybe fundamentals being missed at earlier stages of development?

OK, 80 games in … 47-33 record … in the second wild card slot (behind LAD) and 3.5 games ahead of Cubs then a big distance to CINN at 7 games behind.

Tomorrow starts a series between SF and LA in LA … could really change the gaps between SF-LAD-SD. Tuesday Padres start a series with CINN in CINN and could push them really out of the wild card race.

Can’t get complacent and need to push to win the WEST … but the odds of the playoffs are quite good and SEPT looks to be playoff like with a lot of games between SD-SF-LAD. On the plus side … 5 off days scheduled in SEPT so a good chance to manage the roster for rest.

Looking at all that, Preller’s call on roster movement may be conditioned on the best way to navigate to (and in) SEPT.
