2021 MLB Draft

PreviousPage 8 of 10Next

Woods’ comp seems to be a LHH Aaron Judge … I could live with that.

With the addition of the power potential of Woods to former #2 pick (2019) massive HS OF Joshua Mears (who has gotten hot in A ball) … by 2025 the Padres could have an impressive middle of the order LHH/RHH duo to drive in Tatis, Abrams, Hassell, and Machado, Cronenworth ….

Let’s hope potential turns into production!

I am a lot more excited about Wood than I am about Mears. He was seen as a top of the draft type of player last year. He had a bad few months which allowed him to fall. From every report I have seen, he seems to have a much better bat than Mears. You know, a guy who can actually hit instead of just having huge tools. It would be nice to have a big time left-handed power threat in the lineup again!

Agree projecting Wood > Mears BUT that should not be a slight on the potential of Mears. Mears is also surprising athletic with big power … and after a slow start in A ball has lit it up in the past month. Remember Wood was a more visible prospect on the East Coast while Mears in 2019 was in a bit more obscure scene in Washington state and may not have gotten the national attention.

Years to develop but I am greedy and want BOTH the excel.

Oh I absolutely get it! I see Mears offensive potential as somewhere from Hunter Renfroe to Franmil Reyes. His current offensive output is giving me hope that he can be our next Franmil with better defense as opposed to our nest Renfroe. It's nice to dream on a lineup like this someday:

1) Abrams-2B

2) Hassell/Grisham-CF

3) Tatis-SS

4) Machado-3B

5) Wood-RF

6) Mears-LF

7) Cronenworth-1B

8) Campusano/Nola-C

Dont forget the DH big guy!

1) Abrams-2B

2) Hassell - CF

3) Tatis-SS

4) Machado-3B

5) Mears-LF/DH

6)Wood-LF/DH

7) Grisham-RF

8) Cronenworth-1B

9) Campusano/Nola-C

We are assuming Mears makes it past the trade deadline still with us?

My thought was the Woods pick may in some way be a LH hitting “replacement” for Mears as my guess is he will be traded.

These are just dreams, I don't expect them to happen. I am sure Mears is available. I am sure that any prospect from Marcano on down will be available. Maybe even 1 or 2 of the top 4 for the right price. Nobody can predict Preller.

Booster-if we are using the DH I would definitely think that Mears would be there and Hassell and Wood on the corners. If we still have Grisham I am sure he would be in center or left due to his average arm and gold glove.

Might not get all them in the same OF ... depends on development time. Grisham only has 4 more years of control so Woods or Mears may not have arrived (expect Hassell will have). Plus if you want to speculate .... #1 pick Merrill may be lurking as an OF (or sending Abrams to the OF).

Might see Grisham dealt before he hits FA if the others are as we hope.

Per MLB Draft Tracker … the Padres appear to have signed everyone through round 10 and (did not do a calculation) looks to be over the bonus pool allocation.

Also, so far signed two from Day 3 (rounds 11 - 20) … expect a few more to sign since a number are 4 year college seniors.

It will be interesting to see how many get added to the ACL roster and play and what happens to the players the displace.

We always sign our top 10.

But what are the chances after the signing of Woods we sign even one of the two high school kids?

5%?
Is it even possible now?
