2021 MLB Draft
Quote from fenn68 on July 21, 2021, 1:13 pmQuote from MrPadre19 on July 21, 2021, 12:34 pmWe always sign our top 10.
But what are the chances after the signing of Woods we sign even one of the two high school kids?
5%?
Is it even possible now?
< zero …. $125K will not get it done and going further over the bonus allocation has some significant cost penalties.

It's clear how/why the MadFriars tweeted this ...
MadFriars@madfriarsCondolences to Keith for the mentions undoubtedly coming to his feed from #PadresTwitter.
... but I think Keith is being realistic ... and any/all Padres' fans should be able to see that.
All draft picks are a long shot ... especially after the first couple (or 6 as was the case with Abrams :-)) ...
Keith's comments about Wood remind me of Matt Bush ... just sayin' ...
My hope is that these comments motivate Wood to grow and change more and faster than otherwise ...

I would not link Wood to Bush from anything Law said. Bush’s issues well beyond baseball.
Would worry about his skill set … that may be a motivation issue and that may be just that he is not that good. Recently the Padre have made some expensive gambles on the likes of House, Head, Mears … raw talent … but seem to have been very consistent in selecting individuals with basically good character.
Pretty sure their scouts understood what they were recommending and (unlike Bush who signed low) signed way over slot.

Quote from WindsorUK on July 27, 2021, 7:04 pmYeah, John's article really makes you question the Woods pick.
Obviously Preller hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with this kid. I sure hope it works!
But he isn't a very good hitter NOW! Not sure we can expect him to turn into something he is not.

Anyone care to weigh in on Rocker's situation?
Seems odd the kid refused to allow access to his physical well being prior to the draft, putting himself in what turned out to be a really bad position.
And then Boras has the nerve to say there is absolutely nothing wrong with him. Can't imagine the Mets just allowing the kid to get away without even offering him the lower amount.
Someone here is liar, liar pants on fire( me thinks Boras!)

This is a bid odd … and pretty sure Mets did offer a low ball contract.
Got the sense that Rocker (and whomever were his advisors) did not submit to the pre-draft medicals knowing there could be an issue … might not have been Boras who in the past has been pretty upfront on medicals.
That was probably the red flag that convinced teams to pass on him and falling to the Mets. Mets maybe just took a gamble that if healthy they got a superior player at their pick but if the elbow was damaged they just low ball him or not sign (getting a pick in the same spot in 2022 … save some 2021 money).
As always, a “damaged” elbow is in the eye of the beholder as to severity / risk. Baltimore notoriously voided trades / picks post physicals. So, Mets staff may say really a risk while others (Rocker’s advisors) say not so much.
Just not ready to pin this on Boras’ actions … more on Rocker’s inter circle.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 2, 2021, 2:09 pmSo Rocker CAN NOT enter MLB until next years draft? Or could he sign with anyone, as he is not under contract with anyone and he has declared that he is not returning to school?

Can’t sign with a MLB club. I think he can be drafted again in 2022 and be locked into that club for a year (Mets can’t draft him unless he agrees).
I guess he could sign with a non-affiliate independent team or in Japan / Korea on a one year deal but takes a major risk of injury in his case.
He has ruled out going back to Vanderbilt.
