2021 In Season Trade Ideas
Quote from BoosterSD on July 27, 2021, 12:20 pmQuote from fenn68 on July 27, 2021, 11:52 amSince speculation is the theme … maybe Gallo from Texas for Hosmer (clubhouse leader for a rebuilding club) with Campusano (Padres have Nola/Caratini for 2 more years), Lange (Padres Top 10 with upside), and Thompson (Padres Top 10 … RP with big FB). While Campusano - Lange - Thompson is probably overpay for one year of Gallo they would compensate Texas for taking Hosmer and most of his contract. Gallo would do more for the Padres winning in 2021-22 than any of those prospects.
I would add in another prospect or two (mid level) and try to get TEX to include either Gibson or Kennedy in that deal.

Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2021, 2:04 pmWould pass on Gibson … last 4 starts ERA over 6.00 … think that is more reflective of his career … not worth the gamble. Plus is under contract for next season at $7MM and carries a $9.3MM AAV for luxury tax purposes.
Might take the shot at Kennedy (FA after the season) as a set-up man. Also, very low contract.

Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2021, 2:13 pmAgain … not based in any credible rumor … a Berrios (upper rotation quality SP from MINN under control in 2022) for Ryan Weathers (upside with 5 more years control) is being speculated as an option.
Sort of quality for quality but trading short term benefit for long term upside.
This is a tough one to breakdown … IF you believe that 2021-22 is the Padres best window to win it all and that in those years Berrios is superior to Weathers … yes? No question Berrios is very good now.

To be honest, would almost rather trade Gore over Weathers. I know, Gore is the dream. Weathers is performing now at the ML level.
Gore and two mid tiers for Berrios and Pineda?

Quote from BoosterSD on July 27, 2021, 2:27 pmHow about we dream Preller big. Scherzer and Turner from WAS. Build a return around Kim, he replaces Turner immediately.
Or is Berrios a better option than Scherzer?
Pham in LF, Turner in CF, and slide Grisham to RF . Send Hosmer to BOS, and then Myers becomes back up 1B and OF platoon. Then next season when Pham is a FA, Myers to LF, Turner in CF, and Grisham in RF. Find a fourth OF/DH, and rotate guys through DH.
Finish this season with a batting order of Turner, Frazier, Tatis, Crone, Machado, Grisham, Pham, Nola/Caratini, Pitcher.

Gore and two mid tiers for Berrios and Pineda?
Doubt that works for MINN.
Part of the Weathers part was the idea that MINN wants to be in play again in 2022 and Weathers could step right in the rotation and be effective. Gore may not even be a ML candidate in 2022 (or ever).

Or Gore gets a different coaching perspective and he is their Opening Day starter! Dont be so pessimistic 😉

Scherzer has me confused. He is owed something like $37MM for 2021 but half is deferred (along with money from previous years so his contract owes him $15MM/yr for the next 7 years). So what does the buying team owe to Scherzer and what stays with WASH. Add to that, how is the luxury tax calculated in 2021 and future years?
I see WASH want a deal in place in the next day or two so the prospective buyer can work out contract details with Scott Boras in order to get the no-trade waived.
Everything is negotiable but not easy.
=====
Scherzer may be the better pitcher for the second half of 2021 but is expensive and could crimp other upgrades and is a FA after the season. Berrios is not quite as good but much more favorable contract and controlled in 2022. Berrios probably will cost more in trade assets.

Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2021, 3:34 pmSaw an article adding a twist into the motivation of moving Hosmer and including a top level prospect.
It seems if Hosmer (more specifically his contract) remains a Padres into next season and they are over the luxury tax (will pay to tax) BUT additionally if the want to sign a FA who has a qualifying offer they would additionally lose their #2 and #5 draft pick and $1MM of international pool money.
So, move a prospect today saves money (from Hosmer’s contract), saves prospects for the future, opens money for a FA signing in the winter to help win in 2022.
The KC article (my interpretation) would have KC getting Hosmer, Gore or Hassell, two other prospects for … I guess Duffy.
That deal may or may not work but the concept does make some sense given the secondary impacts of keeping Hosmer.
======
Hard to really know the view the Padres have of the top 4 but for me Abrams and Hassell would be the two that are untouchable … high ceiling hitters that can play defense are just hard to get and also have the better chance of developing than pitchers. I would put Gore (getting really worried about his future) and Campusano since the Padres have alternatives for the next two years (and some question about his defense).

Quote from BoosterSD on July 28, 2021, 10:35 amSterling Marte traded to OAK today. This is good thing for SD, as in that means that he didnt go to SF. Plus, with it being a day game in SD today, hard to see him getting to SD from BAL in time to play against us today.
