2021 In season Roster Moves
Quote from WindsorUK on April 16, 2021, 2:27 pmQuote from Jeremy Hill on April 13, 2021, 5:04 pmWell I'm a bit more concerned about the bullpen being taxed now. Having to go 8 twice in 3 days isn't great.
Still think Tingler needs a better idea of how to use his pen.
I'm with you Jeremy, he's over taxing them. Every now and then you just have to make your starters take one on the chin- make them throw 100 pitches and eat innings even if they're getting pummeled( can't win all 162, live to fight another day)

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 17, 2021, 2:01 pmThey have to get a pen reinforcement today, don't they? Weathers is too good to send down, but I'd be OK with Hill down.
Maybe Gore for length until Lamet's return?

I think it makes a difference as to which SP they push to go longer ... and why he is on the cusp of needing to be taken out. If the game is still a toss-up, make the call on what will be the best for winning the game (of course that is judgement). If the high value SP goes 90 pitches in 3 innings ... might just want him out for health and availability for the next start.
For me, fine to burn the bullpen made up of a lot of very marginal pitchers rather than burn the high value SP who are the key to winning. That is if I have to make a choice.
Not sure Tingler had a lot of options in going longer with Morejon or Snell or Weathers. Made Crismatt carry the load in one game ... Stammen had two three inning stints.
Really the pen was well rested going into Friday’s game ... maybe too rested or maybe just not good enough.

Quote from fenn68 on April 17, 2021, 3:05 pmNot sure they need to make a move .... yes they used a ton of RP but none (except maybe Kela / Hill) needs to be shut down for tonight. Not a lot of pitches and most were pretty rested coming in to the game.
Darvish going tonight ... if he does not go long (and effectively) in this start ... not going to make much difference by bring up a new arm .... Stammen had the day off and only threw 36 pitches on Thursday and should be ready if a long pitcher is needed.
Padres have been firm on Gore coming up as a SP with the idea he remains .... so not likely a near term add (and non-roster). Without knowing what is going on with pitchers at the alternate site, don’t really know who is looking ready and if any could be a long man. Thompson - Norwood - Espinosa - Humphreys are on the 40 man and all are (or have been) have been starters, so could become an option. If they 60 day Morejon they could dip into one of the non-roster arms ... maybe journeyman as they did with Crismatt (thinking Camarena) or a RP prospect (thinking Knehr who they like and was a starter in 2019).

Quote from fenn68 on April 17, 2021, 6:18 pmAltavilla to 10 day IL (right elbow inflammation ... bad sign)
Strahm to 60 day IL
Nick Ramirez, LHRP, added to the roster.
Interesting background .... age 31 ... was a 1B/RP for Cal State Fullerton ... drafted by MILW (2011, 4th round) as played in the minors as a 1B. Was “returned” to a RP in 2017 with 3 decent minor league seasons and some token ML appearances (so-so).
Must have looked good at the alternate site ... another LHRP makes some sense after Weathers outing, Hill getting hit hard, and Pomeranz apparently ailing and day-to-day.

WAR 0.8 W 5 L 4 ERA 4.28 G 51 IP 90.1 SO 85 WHIP 1.362
All with Detroit. Mostly 2019. Outrighted twice by Detroit.... didn't do much in ST.

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 20, 2021, 11:57 amElaborated in "Rotation" thread I feel Paddack has to be optioned for Lamet due to rotation insertion/shift, schedule, 4 game set vs LAD, and potentially 3 "shorter" starts in a row (Paddack/Lamet/Weathers) making a subtraction from Bullpen (Ramirez) a bad idea. Obvious exception would be if Ramirez gets "burned" today if he goes long in a loss... then probably he goes down.
Paddack would not miss a start with a minimum 10 days down. So just about keeping max # of arms available in pen for the tail end of this 17 game stretch.
Less likely, but COULD also/or do this with Weathers after his start; not available last 3 vs LAD, so bring up someone who is? Same situation as Paddack in that the 5th SP doesn't go again until 5/2, which would make Weathers eligible to return in 10 days for that start. BUT he has a lot of value in pen too, so would be sacrificing his potential use "later" (Arizona, maybe SF series) for "now" (LAD series). Another variation is keep to Paddack as the long man for later in LAD series, option Weathers.
Bottom line: I really wouldn't be surprised to see Gore come up during the LAD series. 60-day Morejon or Ona (could start a 20-day rehab only a week or so into minors season if he's ready). Not the ideal "soft landing", but neither was Weathers for playoffs last year, 1st start evervs LAD this year! Would love him to just experience the intensity 1st hand even if he didn't get in a game. He's going to be added to roster sooner or later. Gotta pull out all stops vs. LAD here, and the schedule makes it possible for likely last time until All Star Break. Don't have to catch them, but can't let them get too far up.

Quote from fenn68 on April 20, 2021, 12:14 pmIf Lamet is going Wednesday ... Padres have to make their roster move tomorrow morning. Strategically Paddack makes the most sense ... leaving LHRP Hill, Ramirez, and Pomeranz for the LAD series ... and Weathers to start on Friday eliminating him for the pen for the series.
The decision may be influenced by Paddack’s outing tonight. If he is lights out but does not have a hard outing ... and they see him as a potential long may on SAT or SUN v LAD .. he might hang on. If he gets bombed or is good but in a very hard outing ... more likely to be optioned.

Quote from fenn68 on April 23, 2021, 8:09 pmCrismatt back down .... Morejon to 60 day IL ... Northcraft added to the roster and called up.

Northcraft is someone to pull for .... prospect though 2016 but arm / elbow injury wiped out his 2017-18 seasons ... ended up with an elbow surgery (not TJ) ... worked his way back with a totally altered delivery (to sidearm) that improved is control (an issue before) ... effective in 2019 in the minors, alternate site w/Miami in 2020 and looked good with Padres in ST. 30 years old and first taste of the ML.
Given his history as a starter ... might slot into that 2 inning option if needed in the 5th-6th.
