Quote from Brian Connelly on February 29, 2020, 6:00 pmMan, Vosler 3-4 HR, BB, 2RBI today...
Lamet's slider today looked literally unhittable. GIF of it in dictionary next to "filthy".
LOVE the strong start even though it's "just" ST; think it's important for a young competitive group trying to change the culture in SD. Most of all LOVE all the walks piling up on top of the hits leading to lots of runs & 2nd highest OBP so far in ST despite a # of big dogs just getting rolling.

Quote from hoffy51 on February 29, 2020, 8:23 pmDoes anyone know if the Padres minor leaguers are outfitted in brown, or did they get the blue hand-me-downs?
I hope they are all in brown, and making a change for the whole organization.

Quote from 3fingersplit on February 29, 2020, 11:16 pmInteresting read on friarsonbase.....Profar being released prior to march 10....hence the reason Dozier is here and Pham may be on the shelf with his elbow injury.
Never understood why they dealt Urias this year...created a hole at 2B and have said that Pham would end up on the DL when they made that trade....I sure hope I'm wrong
With all that being said I take friarsonbase with a VERY BIG grain of Salt

Brown with white pants.
You can see them in some of the stories I've posted in the last week.

Number of possible big league second base options in the upper minors for this year even after Urías trade and if (which is a question, not a lock) Profar is released: 6
Number of possible LHH CF options in the upper minors for this year before Pham was traded for: 1

Quote from sportwarrior on March 1, 2020, 4:17 pmLucchesi looking like the same old Lucchesi. Wasted pitches, awful control. Yeah its early, but this has been his MO for years. I really hope Quantrill takes a step forward and claims the 5 spot.

It's early in ST, but yeah Lucchesi is a #5 starter. When he is on he is above average, but if his churve aint churving he is a sitting duck. Quantril has a higher ceiling, and I wouldnt be surprised if he outpitches Lucchesi in ST but is that enough? No one would be too shocked if Quantril started the year in Triple-A, but Lucchesi was the only starter to qualify throwing 163 innings last year, 4.18 ERA, his WAR was 3rd on the team behind Paddack and Yates. Can you go from "#1 starter" to Triple-A in one year? If you put him in the bullpen, then what reliever do you not carry?
On the same note, last year Paddack made the OD roster by outpitching the entire starting rotation (also Quantril and Allen pitched so bad in ST they couldnt be considered). This year in 8 games, youve had starts from 6 different pitchers (Davies, Quantril, Lucchesi, Paddack, Lamet, Morejon). You've had appearances from 36 different pitchers already. Of the ones who havent Richards being held back a few days is understandable after TJ. But no Gore, no Patino... Some believed they could pitch their way into the rotation to begin 2020. Might be hard if they are only on back fields.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on March 1, 2020, 5:06 pmYa'll releasing Profar -- look closer .333/1.110 OPS... he says F you all....
Yeah Joey Fuego is the #5 until he is not, dude led SP in lots of categories last yr.. Q is going to have to be Paddack like this ST to even be considered over Joey-- Likely Q to AAA --Joey #5 with a leach...

Quote from fenn68 on March 1, 2020, 7:56 pmThat 5th starter may be touch and go throughout the season ... not sure either Lucchesi or Quantrill can hold the slot down the stretch.
Lucchesi is 26 and although dominate at PETCO (2.56 ERA in 91 innings) he offset that completely by being truly bad on the road (6.22 ERA in 72 innings) ... who is the real Lucchesi? Can they pitch him only at PETCO?
Quantrill is 25 and his splits were at PETCO (4.88 ERA in 59 innings) and AWAY (5.52 ERA in 44 innings) ... plus he had a great spell mid-season but poor spells early and late ... who is the real Quantrill?
Both AWAY stats don't cut it for a team that wants to contend ... so up to them to show considerable improvement or mid-season expect a call-up for that #5 ..... they would have gotten more leeway IF the Padres were targeting another 90 loss season but if contending is their objective in 2020 it should be fish or cut bait.
