2020 Season
Quote from fenn68 on June 24, 2020, 7:59 amProbably each team will view this differently but still unclear about what “taxi squad” players get paid ... and that may influence a bit who is kept on the taxi squad and (if on the 40 man) how that impacts ML service time and minor league options?Apparently a team does not have to invite all its 40 man ... so if not invited (e.g. Ona) ... that considered a minor league option year in a year without a minor league season? How are the ones already options handled (e.g. Morejon)?
Dozier ... signed a minor league contract (likely with an opt out) and if he made the ML roster a decent contract and, likely, a decent minor league pay if the did not opt out. His future could go a lot of different ways.
Might see some surprise moves given a “limited” ST, short season, and club money concerns.

Quote from fenn68 on June 24, 2020, 8:24 am40 games with NL West opponents (10 per) and 20 games with AL West opponents (4 per opponent but with travel concerns 2 home / 2 away is not ideal). Not just health but the inability to accommodate a lot of “travel days” plus some need to have a cushion for potential rainouts ... maybe not in SD but an issue for most of the country.
Especially with longer trips to Seattle, Texas, Houston (although could always bundle the two Texas teams for away trips).
Given the short schedule, don’t want to randomly give a team an advantage / disadvantage in sorting opponents BUT could always just have 2 AL West opponents (10 games per) selecting the opponent by some travel minimization formula. Plus could go with 5 game home/away series. AZ and COLO could pair with the two Texas clubs. SD would be linked with LAA and OAK? Not “fair” but maybe practical for scheduling, safety, and cost.

Quote from Brian Connelly on June 24, 2020, 8:57 amThe West Division teams in NL & AL are losers from a travel standpoint... East teams never have to travel out of their time zone!
Thought they had already decided: 10 games vs each division opponent = 40. Then 20 games vs AL West, but might be 6 games vs. their "rival" from that division (Mariners for Pads?), which would leave 14 to split vs. 3 other teams? So might be imbalanced scheduling in those 20 games vs those 4 teams ? Seems like it'd be easier to just play 5 games vs each of them.

Central works our pretty well .... the distances between the core cities are really short. Even on the “extremes” PITT to KC is not a major move and if they schedule KC/STL as one trip .. not so bad. Same with a MINN/MILW pairing.
Wonder where the “EAST” will locate Toronto since unlikely free movement in/out of Canada is going to happen near term. Sort of a similar question with any team in a city that has a strong outbreak ... MLB is reserving the right to move that team’s games to another city for safety reasons (no fans to worry about).
In 5 years when expansion happens to bring in some more cash to the owners (and jobs for the players) ... hope one team is on the west coast (PORT or LV or?) allowing MLB to create a “West League” of 8 teams while shifting the two Texas teams into a “Central League”. The symmetry of four leagues of eight teams is more logical that the 30 team league for scheduling, costs, playoffs, etc.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 24, 2020, 9:48 amAny particulars on how the "man on 2nd base" plan for extra innings works?
Does this baserunner have to be someone who has not already been in the lineup?
Do they have to stay in the game or lose eligibility for this game?

Quote from fenn68 on June 24, 2020, 10:02 amRandom thought on scheduling for a pure TV perspective (game start times) since there are no fans attending games to consider but with minimal “travel days” the timing of getting teams in and out of cities.
TV (and local fans) will want prime time starts but if TV wants maximum exposure across the country they will want “day games” and “night games” and NYY/BOST will get prime time on the East Coast to maximize eyeballs on the broadcasts.
I guess the East - Central - West could go with games at 1PM-4PM-7PM in some mix and match pattern and with the time zones have every place covered with up to 12 hours of baseball daily ... as East shows up as an early game on the West coast and West shows up as a late game in the East. Of course with not fans .... working in some 10 AM starts and maybe stagger starts on the hour through the day would really ensure some coverage.
Personally, I would love the Padres to be starting games “earlier” than the 7PM slot.

Seems they are going with the player who made the last out in the previous inning being the man on 2nd. Unearned run if the player scores.
I am not sure what happens after the 10th inning if neither team scores or both teams score and it is still a tie. Appears to be an 11th inning but not sure if the structure remains. I guess this helps in reducing endless games but does not eliminate the chance and if the objective in a short season is player safety might fall short of its intended purpose.
I may be the only one ... but I would be happy with a tie and the 3 points for a win ... 1 point for a tie ... 0 points for a loss. Still incentive to go all out and win and finish up the standings without throwing the players to the wolves.

Quote from fenn68 on June 24, 2020, 10:47 amNot sure but one report was the “60” who can be invited to ST2 ... would be the 40 man roster and 20 non-roster types. Still unclear how that is paired down to the 50 active/non-active during the season (if that is still the structure) since another comment was the active roster has to come for that original game 60. The add the fuzziness of trades that may include minor leaguers not part of the 60.

I guess this makes sense but would not be ideal when your Catcher is the guy you're counting on to score from 2nd on a single!
