2020 In Season Trade ideas

PreviousPage 27 of 43Next

Concur with the comments concerning future trades.  Sets up Mejia/Naylor trade material for that SP.  AJ working it!

Both Rosario and Potts are Rule 5 available this winter?

Can't imagine we'd have protected either one?

5:21PM: Right-hander Gerardo Reyes is going to Los Angeles as the return for Castro, MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell reports (Twitter link).

Since was on the 40 man ... no other roster move is needed for Castro. Not a loss as a 27 year old RP with limited control. Plus with Castro a FA after the season ... will open another winter roster spot.

But with no more moves three players need to be sent to USD.

Only 2 ... they already sent Baez down to make room for Rosenthal (in uniform for today’s game).

Seems straightforward with Torrens down for Castro and Naylor down for Moreland.

Of course pending any trade maneuvers.

New rumor ... Padres are favorites to land Jason Castro ... 33 year old LHH catcher from LAA. Not a good bat but good defensively. A veteran complement to Hedges for the playoffs. FA after this season.

More go for it now deals ... should not cost much more than a PTNL of little consequence but would require a 40 man roster move.

Probably over thinking as I usually do ... but adding Castro (if it happens) .... could make it easier to include Mejia or Torrens in a different deal. Sort of the same thinking that adding Moreland could make it easier to include Naylor in a deal.

Don't think Castro was the "one more deal" that was speculated.

You've got to be in the ballpark with that one, Fenn.

Absolutely ZERO reason to bring in a no hit, solid D catcher in other than you're flipping someone else.

Big question is, which of our C's has the most appeal to another team?

You guys could be right, but I think you're looking at the C position wrong...  In a 60 game season, Mejia started off half time hindered at some point early on by a bruised thumb negatively affecting his hitting.  This season is effectively a mulligan for him.  IMO (and with benefit of hindsight), Preller/Tingler miscalculated not having Torrens on O.D. 30-man roster.  It wound up staying at 28, and if he had already been there, Mejia would have gone on IL sooner, and Torrens last option now wouldn't have been used up (instead we got 2 appearances by David Bednar).

But they still would have traded for Castro to be better/more experienced at C especially defensively.   Torrens really looked kind of rough last night.  Probably both guys getting hurt developmentally by the shortened season.

Look at Pads offense.  Top 5-8 most categories.  2 MVP candidates.  2 high $ vets absolutely worth it pulling their weight.  2 incredible "rookies" in Grisham (essentially) & Cronenworth.  And now we have Pham & Moreland/France under contract 2021 for LF & DH respectively....  Offense from C is just a cherry on the sundae; they need strong defense.  It would be unimaginable with this team to trade Hedges & roll with Castro, Mejia, Torrens.  Hedges' value increases in the bigger, tighter (i.e. playofffs!) games.

I would not be surprised at all if in 2021 the Pads just hit the "do-over" button & roll with the same 3 C again... but with Campusano hopefully playing & getting ever closer.

Rumor has it that Cleveland wants Grisham and/or Cronenworth in the package for Clevinger.  That had better not happen!

A head scratcher rumor just popped up (Rosenthal / Passen) ... Padres in “active talks” with Seattle for Austin Nola ... 30 year old C/1B/DH type who can hit, long control and low cost ... a RHH who can actually hit. Supposedly for a “significant prospect” whatever that means.

After just adding Castro ... with Hedges, Torrens, Mejia at C .... with Hosmer, Moreland, France for 1B ... don’t see the fit and not going to pay a lot for a RH PH.

Now this is Preller we are talking about ... and he does like 3 way trades ... MAYBE he is trying to deal for Nola for another team to get what he wants from that 3rd team. Could be they don’t want either Torrens or Mejia or maybe see Nola as a 1B.

I could see CLEV preferring Nola to catch ... proven ML hitter and they are in the midst of a playoff run. Would think TEX could go for him or the two Padre options.

Head scratcher ... but it is Preller.

Going to be an interesting time to 1 pm in SD ... every “insider” has the Padres deep into negotiations for a major SP (probably all of them) ... other deals with no clear idea if they are connected to getting the SP.

One suggests the Padres prefer a catching duo of Nola and Castro this season and could move on from Hedges. Can’t see that at all (in the middle of a playoff run where a catcher has to have some understanding of the pitchers).

Well we know Preller does not sleep ... so something can come down at any time. Stay tuned.

OK this is getting a bit crazy ... one report has the Padres now in on Gallo for TEX (LF I guess). Beginning to sound like 2015 redu.

Think Rosenthal said Preller is in on anyone with a heartbeat.

Again ... could be to procure an asset to flip in another trade.

Also read that Nola can play OF. Did look him up on bb reference and he has only played a couple of games there. So I dont think SD is getting him for OF.

However, as Fenn mentioned. Preller does have the pension for those 3 team deals, maybe a SEA, SD, TEX deal, where SD gets both Gallo and Lynn, SEA gets a prospect, and TEX gets Nola, Pham, and a couple of prospects.
