2020 Draft

PreviousPage 13 of 20Next

YEAH!   Actually took the highest rated guy!  Wilcox might be disappointed where he got picked.. might have to create some $ now with our 4th (533K) & 5th (398K) round slots to go over slot some for him, or Hassell might be enough below slot to accomodate him ...  either way, I am totally fine as long as they get the top 4 picks signed.

Love that Wilcox is 6 months - 1 year younger than most collegians; helps make up for lost season here... not the season to draft a 24 year old college senior.  But no way Pads could have anticipated Wilcox would fall all the way out of the 2nd round.  Drafted in 3rd round... who cares if there's "Reliever risk"

Doesn't SEEM like they'd have to go way over on the other guys all drafted a little "high" to MLB.com rankings?

Owen Cassie out of Canada at #2.

6’4”/190 ... long and lean .... “60” arm, “55” power and speed .... only 17. Fits that RF mold of power, speed, arm.

Only a “45” hit but the bet is a 17 year old out of Canada (or any real cold climate) can up the hit skill once he gets constant reps in a warm environment.

=====

First three pick .... HS. Preller on form.

Best comp I've heard is that he's a Canadian Zac Veen

For the 80th pick Wilcox looks like a very good upside gamble. Only 20 with a “65” FB backed up by “55” slider and change is a strong base to work off.

Poor control and “delivery” concerns ... but time to work on that ... but stuff is stuff and that got him a #23 rating form MLB.

Guessing he had a bonus number that did not materialize early ... Padres stayed in contact and he settled on a lesser number than initially. Padres are probably using “extra” bonus money for the other picks ... should have picked up some for all three ahead of him and who knows about picks #4 and #5.

Good chance we see some “off the board” picks of College JRs who may have fallen out of the first 5 rounds and be capped at $20K ... yet the Padres really do like them and the kid want to turn pro ... so do a deal at maybe $50K where the player is better off and the Padres have bonus money to deploy to maybe Wilcox.

In a sense, the gap between a 4/5 vs a 6 is not that clear so if the pool of options is “large” ... negotiation is clearly in play. Players out of College are not in a great spot to haggle.

Levi Thomas in the 4th round out of Troy. As expected, unranked RH College pitcher who should be a low bonus signing. Small type with a low 90s FB ... probably a long shot and maybe RP.

Blaze Jordan is about to get “paid”!

Sox took a guy not even expected to be drafted at all in the 1st round and had no 2nd round pick.

So they can now give Blaze whatever it will take to get him to dump MSU.

Not sure it is a great idea though.

This kid is boom or bust.

Good spin rate, great work ethic.  Pitchability guy.

But concerned they picked even a relative unknown HS guy in 5th round; have to sign him at all to "capture" the pool $, so not sure why HS vs college (less leverage) there??

???  Doubt they've "settled" anything yet?  Obviously Pads think they have $ to work with, and arguably could be below slot on all of their other picks (though not sure about HS in 5th round... his SLOT is <400K which would be 100K now, 150K in each of 2021 & 22... not screamingly compelling.... and that's just to break even on the pool $?  Hardball take it or leave it offer?  Or knew he's a play pro now vs college guy?

Wilcox #23 rating from MLB is a slot of 2.9 MM, about 2MM+ higher than #80 selection.  Not likely to get ALL of that, but this year's deferred signing bonuses REALLY work against a signing a high end College Soph; guy could conceivably have way more $ in hand a year from now "just" by getting the same, or even a lower, signing bonus next year.

Clearly you want to sign the 1st round stuff guy in 3rd round if you can, but the consolation prize of recouping the pick next year in what is essentially guaranteed to be a stronger than normal draft isn't the end of the world either.

Now, another Boras advisee might soon surpass, or at least approach, Head’s bonus benchmark.

On Thursday, the Padres spent a third-round pick — one of their six total selections in the 2020 MLB Draft — on University of Georgia pitcher Cole Wilcox. Wilcox stands a brawny 6-foot-5, throws right-handed, can hit 100 mph and, owing to his first-round talent, is believed to be seeking something in the neighborhood of $3 million.

Just saw this on The Athletic...  sources in article say he is likely to sign.

Confident the Padres sign everyone and spend their entire allocation ... they seem to be skilled in doing that every year.

Like the picks overall. Hassell and Wilcox are the high profile quality projections and they are supported by two lesser known but still upside projections in Lange and Cassie ... then two under the radar arms from under covered teams in Thomas and Haynes with some stuff to work with. Nice blend of risk profiles and upsides.

Now I have someone to over hype in the 5th round pick .... anyone with a name like "Jagger" from a town of 209 is a worthy follow ... helps he has raw talent and a legit FB.

Now, the next step is to see how the Padres (and the players) handle the non-drafted FA pool with a $20K signing limit and what may turn out to be a very limited number of slots (50?) in next year's AZ rookie league considering the Padres are way over that with their current players.
