2020 Draft

I would like to see the Padres draft Blaze Jordan with their second round pick. It seems to me that we don't have a real first base prospect in the system.

Doesn't seem to fit the current Padre mold with only a "45" hit tool / "45" field tool ... would be a pretty big gamble on a one skill prospect.

Keep in mind a good chance we have 6 years of Hosmer (unless they get lucky and he opts out), 6 years of Naylor, and IF Campusano is as good has billed to take over C ... 5 years of Mejia (to 1B) or 6 years of Hunt coverted to 1B and not arriving for 2-3 years. Don't think the Padres finding a 1B will be an issue. Draft Jordan if he is the best on the board but not because he is a 1B with power.

Sort of at the point where players selected all have some questions, so tough to evaluate. Putting Kelley aside ... no idea why he has yet to be selected unless a firm commitment to go to College that even 1st round money couldn't shake .... any HS kid still on the board without a 2020 season to boost his stock has to be even a greater than normal gamble. At least the track record on the College types is longer.

Scouts have to be working overtime on this 2nd round pick to argue for their preferred choice given such limited data on the HS kids ... might boil down to Preller accepting the recommendation of the scout with the best track record.

Would not be surprised to see another HS type with the 2nd round pick before the College types start filling out rounds 3-5.

Never can out guess the bonus actually agreed upon but would seem both Hassell and Lange could come a bit under the slot allocation leaving some money to entice another HS prospect to sign .... hard to see having to go over slot on any college players at this stage of the draft .. especially if they end up non-drafted the max they get is $20K. I expect most of those non-drafted juniors will sign rather than go back to school (assuming a team makes an offer) ... not sure how much their slotting will rise by returning and likely most want to play.

Pretty sure the Padres already have an agreement with Hassell so they should be able to execute their "plan" whatever that is going forward.

The kid only had one hat and it was brown and he put it on immediately after the announcement...indicating it was a done deal ahead of time to me.

Blaze Jordan is intriguing due to his power but also is a bit of a curiosity since hes been in the spotlight already since he was 13 years old.

I can only imagine how his power will continue to develop as he becomes a man.

Unless a team views a 6’2 / 220 pound 17 year old who has worked to lose weight maybe as physically good as he gets.

Looking at his reports .... awesome “raw power” as he dominates home run contests ... so I don’t think adding power is important.

He has to convince a team that his below average skills for hitting, running , fielding can be offset to get that power to the ML. If I were him ... might opt for College to use that route to show teams he can hit at least up to an “average” rating which given his power will raise his stock.

Still ... if he wants to sign ... someone to take in rounds 3 - 5 for the upside gamble by some team.

Although I expect a pitcher in round 2 ... might see Daniel Cabrera.

LHH OF from LSU ... “55” on hit and arm so RF potential and “50” on the power, speed, fielding. On the MLB rankings he is in the right zone.

The underlying factor is that the Padres drafted him out of HS late because of a strong commitment to LSU .. considered a top HS hitter at the time ... so a long track record on his ability.

Wrist injury last year hampered his hitting which might have pushed him down to board. Not going to be an elite player but very good chance he will be a ML player.

How much time is allowed for each pick for round 2? 3-5?

I wouldn't mind taking a chance on Dax Fulton if he's still around in round #3.

He's a 6'6" 225lb High School lefty.

He had TJ surgery last September but since he won't be expected to play this season anyway he should be ready to go next Spring right on schedule.

First round talent in the 3rd round with TJ already out of the way.

Obviously a risk to recover and he could go the College route but there has to be uncertainty on his end also about his recovery so pretty good chance he signs if drafted.

Yeh, mentioned him earlier and given the recovery rate these day from TJ ... not an unrealistic gamble on a kid who was thought to be the best LH HS pitcher in the draft.

TJ in September could suggest he could be throwing as soon as a fall instruct in AZ and clearly should be ready for ST ... so no real lost time in professional development.

Tougher call for the kid on signing or going to college. On one hand, if consensus was he could have been a late 1st rounder, going college could get his stock (and money) back up. On the other hand would he be better off rehabbing from TJ with a professional club with their resources and experience in dealing with TJ and less of a motivation to rush his return to peak ... make the money at the back end when he makes the ML.

He would be on my radar.

Owen Cassie out of Canada at #2.

6’4”/190 ... long and lean .... “60” arm, “55” power and speed .... only 17. Fits that RF mold of power, speed, arm.

Only a “45” hit but the bet is a 17 year old out of Canada (or any real cold climate) can up the hit skill once he gets constant reps in a warm environment.

First three pick .... HS. Preller on form.

Owen Caissie 6-3 185 17 (L-?) bat first outfielder Notre Dame HS (Ontario, Canada)
