2019 Spring Training Thread

Considering the depth of the farm system and Preller's history .... would guess they go for the highest ceiling prospects even if they are in short season / rookie ball and that would be based on their scouting.
With Cleveland ... (and I don't think Renfroe has all that much trade value) .... could see Preller getting infatuated with George Valeria (OF, rookie ball), Brayan Rocchio (SS, rookie ball), Lenny Torres (RHP, rookie ball), or similar.
Preller has said we wants the "waves" of talent to continue and these 18 year olds will not be a factor for 5-6 years ... a factor to replace someone or just as trade chips themselves. Also, in the near term, being non-roster for 4 more years eases the roster crunch coming in the next couple of winters.
Of course if he could do better with another team then he goes another route but hard to see a team ... in contention ... with a bigger need than Cleveland.

Two things solidified themselves last night.
First is that Perdomo needs to go.
I hate it for him but if we are in "win now" mode he can't see the major league mound again.
Second,Tatis needs to be the Opening day shortstop...again,if we are in "win now" mode.
1 or 2 wins could make a difference in September....he stole 2 runs for us last night.
In case you missed it he legged out an infield hit,stole second,stole 3rd(beat out the pick off attempt) and then scored on a hit.
Later he legged out another infield hit and scored from FIRST on a ground ball UP THE MIDDLE!
Surely there's video of it somewhere?
So in a case like this...where he clearly runs through Hoffmans stop sign,does he get reprimanded or congratulated?
Being a Rookie I would think he would get a talking too?
BTW it was AMAZING!

I hope we start Tatis Opening day and then if we are out of it this summer find a reason to send him down "then" for a few weeks.
Wouldn't this be ideal?

Not for Tatis.
Hard to see how the Padres view the ST of Tatis which really looks exciting from the fans standpoint ... a lot of hedging on what the see as ML ready based on 2018 and ST. Don't think they are focused on the gaming for control.
Might be an initial call between Tatis and Urias ... since clearly they want both to be playing every day for development while Kinsler as that experienced veteran has be excellent in ST which is good if they want to start 2019 strong with him in the line-up. Padres seem to love them both for the future ... maybe a more difficult call than we think.
Agree that every win is important so would take whomever (in their view) gives them the best shot out of the blocks but confident we will be seeing both by mid-season.
Side: in this era of signing early extension (see Jimenez, Snell) plus Tatis' comment about want to stay a Padre long term ... maybe strike before he changes his mind and extend him getting 2 or 3 FA years which will eliminate the control debate.

Whew! Perdomo has be truly bad this ST ... the move to the pen has not been a help.
Seems that they still like his "stuff" ... and without a lot of roster pressure at this point (still can put Jankowski and Nix on the 60 day DL) ... expect him to just be sent to AAA to keep working on the RP transition. Not 13 better upside pitchers ticketed for AAA so why not. By the time they need a roster slot, have a clearer picture of his future ... then they DFA him.
Sort of the wait on any DFA decision until the last minute ...

Never "for sure" but certainly leaning that way ... Green (although committing to nothing about any players making the roster but suggesting Machado / Hosmer are good bets ... wink wink) did comment how well Urias is playing defensively at SS and he expects him to bring that OBP they seek given he has made the development at each level he has been tested. Then add the ongoing commentary that Tatis has only had about a half of season in AA may put Tatis to start in AAA to better test his handling of next level pitching.
Maybe not opening day but Green did "imply" that we could end up seeing a middle INF (at some point) of Tatis - Kinsler with Urias fitting in at both slots as the situation dictates but with a lot of ABs for all plus rest to keep them all fresh ... and at Kinsler's age may be necessary later in the season.
Every indication is that the Padres will stretch out the cut process until after next Tuesday's exhibition game in Seattle and even then next week keep a couple of extra players in SD (MiL season not starting and at home to start the season) then do some roster adjustments maybe when the #4 and #5 SP are needed.
Although I would admit it would be fun for the fans to see Paddack start with a middle INF of Tatis - Urias plus the new kid Machado on the opening weekend.

Well got that right so far:
Luis Perdomo has been optioned to Minors camp. His transition to the bullpen hasn’t been good yet, but he’ll continue pitching in one-inning stints for now.
