It also appears he's going to opt out of his contract rather than accept an assignment to AAA. I was sort of hoping he could reclaim some of that old magic and have one last good ride as a Padre, but it doesn't look to be in the cards. That said, I'm glad the team isn't hanging onto him because of some kind of "veteran grit" type reason. I'd be fine with Erlin filling in for Lamet during the month of April before sliding back into a long relief role.

Looks like Cimber is in the pen, one less open spot.

The fact that Capps cleared without it ever being public that he was on waivers is probably an indication of some of what's going on. Matt Szczur and Jordan Lyles's needs to clear and then decide if he's accepting the assignment is one hold-up in public announcements I'm sure. I also suspect they're trying to get a trade figured out with one of the two second basemen, and that they might be trying to sneak it in tomorrow when compensation draft picks are an option. (That was a factor in when they made the Kimbrel deal going into 2015.)
And, as always, a reminder that the opening day roster is one of about 60 different big league rosters the team will have this year.

I'd be really surprised if Asuaje made the team "over" Spangenberg considering he is 2b only.
He didn't outperform Spangenberg by enough to warrant losing the versatility and speed Cory brings.
But,if they want to keep Villanueva AND 3 Catchers i guess it could happen.
I sure hope not.

Not sure what you mean. Asuaje was nails this spring and showed some good pop. Spangy is definitely more versatile and can even play LF, but Asuaje was a hitting machine, and I thought, outperformed Spangy. He also seemed to hit with RISP

I'm not really all that excited about the announced bullpen construction. Hand and Yates are great and Stammen is fine, but Lyles was terrible and Cimber/McGrath/Makita are all soft tossers. I feel like that group is gonna look dramatically different in 4-6 weeks.

Szcur will be replaced by Franchy soon enough
Either McGrath or Cimber will be replaced by Ross next week when they need a #5 starter.
Lyles is only here until Strahm can get enough innings. Strahm >>> Lyles but Green mentioned he is still only able to throw an inning every 3 days or so and needs to be able to throw on back to back days. Until then we need a long man.
Could also see Erlin move to that spot when Lamet comes back (or Lucchesi comes up)
