Pads are taking this down to the wire with both position players and pitchers with a lot of candidates legitimately in the mix. My shot at pitching:

1. Lamet (25) ... 6 control years ... 3 options
2. Perdomo (24) ... 4 control years ... 3 options (last two appearances seem to have won him a spot)
3. Mitchell (26) ... 4 control years ... 0 options (seems a lock BUT would not be surprised to see him in the pen soon)
4. Richard (34) ... 2 year contract
5. Ross (30) ... 1 year contract .... non-roster add who did earn the spot with ST performance

1. Hand (L) (28) ... 3 year contract plus club option for 2021
2. Yates (30) ... 3 control years ... 0 options
3. Stammen (34) ... 2 year contract ... 0 options
4. Makita (33) ... 2 year contract ... 3 options
5. Erlin (27) ... 3 control years ... 1 option (pitched too well to be optioned and need a second LHRP if Baumann is optioned)
6. Lyles (27) ... 1 year contract with a club option for 2019 ... 0 options ... (not sure why since pitched poorly ... think the Padres want to see more out of the pen ... could we waived sooner than later in April-May)
7. Young (38) ... 1 year contract and non-roster add who can walk if not added after ST ... has pitched out of the pen and by all accounts the organization likes him and he has had more good than bad ST outings

Capps who is out of minor league options starts he season on the DL as he works back from surgery ... think all the other rostered pitchers have minor league options. A 13th pitcher should be promoted around May and history suggests that there will be a DL or two before June plus some poor performance leading to released arms (see Lyles). So, this buys some more evaluation time.

Although it appears that Renfroe will make the club with the thought that Pirela plays every day but split time between OF and 2B ... essentially creating a platoon of Renfroe and Asuaje when there is a LHP AND Richard / Perdomo are NOT starting (they want the defense in there for ground ball pitchers). That provides precious few AB for Renfroe and minimal exposure to RHP ... no opportunities to show improvement. So not really sure why he is kept to basically fill the bench. He was asked to show in ST his improvement in hitting RHP and his ability to take some BB .. he has not. Note that Asuaje was asked to show improvement vs. LHP and he has. Pirela needed to show his hitting will be sustained and he has. Consider:

vs. RHP: Pirela ......340 OBP / 465 SLG (2017) ..... 545/750 (ST)

Asuaje ..... 349/386 (2017) ....................... 372/579 (ST)

Renfroe ... 244/393 (2017) ......................  289/500 (ST) ... does not appear Renfroe has stepped up to the challange

Additionally, Renfroe had the lowest of the three in BB% and in ST it is less than in 2017 (5.6% to 5%). A bit worried about his dominance over LHP (especially if he gets limited to 1 out of every 4-5 games).

vs. LHP: Pirela ...... 367/561 (2017) ....................... 450/588 (ST) ... basically Pirela is hitting everyone

Asuaje ..... 288/284 (2017) ...................... 349/386 (ST) ... looks like Asuaje met the challenge of improving vs. LHP

Renfroe .... 392/684 (2017) ...................... 261/652 (ST) ... the drop on OBP vs LHP is a concern

NOT a good ST for Renfroe.

Heard an interview with Green today ... don't expect any roster announcements until AFTER the exhibition game in EP.

The exceptions being some "procedural" moves ... he did not elaborate. Pure guess would be the need for some sort of action relating to players being put on the DL or 60 day DL (maybe the date is of issue and maybe being optioned first is a consideration) and combined with the potential key date in adding (or releasing) a non-roster veteran player. Could be they have put some (e.g. Szczur) on waivers and that process could cause action sooner than later.

Note: His comments suggested that Renfroe is on the team.

Note: He did say Urias would get time at SS in AAA and could be the call-up if there was an issue with Galvis.

e.g......szczur, spangy, asuaje, renfro etc similar to the list you put up about pitchers ?

Of the Padre position players on the 40 man who are out of minor league options ... only Szczur and Villanueva (although they can't option Headley, Galvis, or Hosmer due to service time considerations).  IF they add Ellis they can't option him either. On the other hand, if they add Lopez they can option him (2 option years left).

Green announces Top 3 Spots for Rotation: Richard, Lamet, Perdomo. With Mitchell most likely going 4th, I have to think the 5th spot goes to Ross.

This likely spells the end of the road for CY in my opinion.

Chris Young is likely destined for a long relief role. If you're doing the math that leaves Tyson Ross as the probable fifth starter.
