2018 Starting Lineup--25 Man Roster
Quote from 3fingersplit on March 22, 2018, 9:44 amI totally get the idea that it's a numbers game and the talent has made this a quality problem to be sure but....
Spangenberg should be on this team and in my opinion it's a no brainer
The guy can flat out play anywhere you put him and the best part in my mind is that he plays HARD....never has a clean uniform
when the game is done unless he didn't see the field
C'mon AJ and Andy....Spangy is a keeper
Please don't make the mistake of moving him, and there would be a lot of teams that would love to have him on their roster, and then watch him flourish for somebody else......I've seen this movie before and it kills me to think what could have been

I agree.
I'm thinking if they are keeping Villanueva and they want to keep 3 Catchers that Spangys versatility makes him the one to keep for 2b.
Even if they consider Asuaje the better Secondbaseman we need to maximize every roster spot if 3 Catchers is what they want.(Which i could do without).
They could put Pirela at 2b on the days they needed Spangy to cover somewhere else on the diamond.

Quote from Commie on March 22, 2018, 12:29 pmI do not understand this 3 catchers thing vs Spangenberg. In what world is Raffi Lopez a better hitter than Corey Spangenberg? The only rationale I have heard for carrying him as a third catcher is the LH pop off the bench theory. (a) While Spangenberg is not a power hitter per se, he did pop 13 last year and (b) as noted above his versatility and speed make him far more useful.

Quote from jcp2400 on March 22, 2018, 12:43 pmI really think that Green just likes to mess with the media and the Padres aren't seriously considering carrying three catchers.
Anyways here is my opening day lineup + bench + pitching spots vs RHP Anderson from MIL
1. CF Margot
2. RF Myers
3. 1B Hosmer
4. LF Pirela
5. 3B Headley
6. 2B Asuaje
7. C Hedges
8. SS Galvis
9. P Richard
Bench
OF Renfroe
OF Jankowski
IF Villaneuva
IF/OF Spangenberg
C Ellis
Rotation
2. Mitchell
3. Lamet
4. Ross
5. Young (I think they send Perdomo down to start the year)
Bullpen
CL - Hand
RHP - Makita
RHP - Stammen
RHP - Maton
RHP - Stock (is this the bullpen steal for 2018?)
LHP - Baumman (I like Buddy as a LOOGY)
LR - Lyles :/ but guranteed contract

Quote from fenn68 on March 22, 2018, 1:10 pmAbout the only thing I see as a negative for Spangenberg (vs. Jankowski and Lopez) is that he is clearly the worst of the three against LHP. Not sure why that would be critical when Villanueva and Pirela / Renfroe will also be on the bench has RHH bats.
All three have had good ST but at some point don't they have to consider their past track records (none are "prospects") as a better indicator of 2018 performance? Consider career stats:
- Spangenberg (28) ... 857 AB .... 324 OBP / 401 SLG (2B/3B/LF)
- Jankowski (27) ....... 500 AB .... 310 OBP / 304 SLG (CF)
- Lopez (30) .............. 72 AB .... 277 OBP / 375 SLG (C)
Unless they see an issue down the road with Ellis (or Hedges), can't see Lopez having greater value than Spangenberg or Jankowski ... a player who has barely seen the ML by age 30 at a position of need normally ... catcher.
Maybe the see a demotion of Spangenberg to START the season is more an effort to get him AB and work on his hitting LHP with the idea that post-Headley he will get the first shot at 3B (or platoon with Villanueva if he can't hit LHP).
Would guess that Lopez (maybe Ellis) gets the axe when the jump back to 13 pitchers. Does not help Spangenberg (unless he bumps Jankowski). He needs a trade (Headley), failure (Jankowski), or injury in the INF. On the somewhat optimistic side .... Spangenberg is the starting 3B in 2019 (unless it is Villanueva or Urias or Tatis or PTNL).

Quote from fenn68 on March 22, 2018, 3:35 pmAlthough I don't think this is part of the Padres' decision making process ... maybe a benefit is gaining an extra control year on Spangenberg (he is at 3 years / 16 days ML service). If nothing else it may help future trade value and until a 3B emerges in the system (Potts is maybe 4 years out) he would provide some level of stability. Needs only about a month and a half in AAA to extend control from 2020 to 2021.
If circumstances allow them to flip Jankowski and Spangenberg during the season, the same could happen to Jankowski (he is at 2 year / 14 days ML service). A month and a half in AAA would extend control from 2021 to 2022.
Doubt either one will be a major factor in those extra years ... but it is not a bad "just in case" move and may benefit in trade talks at some point. As with not having a near term 3B coming ... not really a back-up CF near term (I see Cordero .... if he develops ... winning a corner spot ... but today that is still IF).

And Colten Brewer, who also was signed to a big league contract. I think he makes it over both Lyles (who is terrible) and Stock (who I think can be optioned).
